Yestarday I was quite lucky - third time in my life I saw praymantis. This time right out our campus cafe. And just this day I take my Sony T1 with me, which I usually do not carry. I shot pure guy from short distance many times - which is this device pretty good at. Some of the shorts came out pretty good.

Here the pics:

Thanks, Vassili.

Those are great! The second one is especially nice.

We had those all over my yard when I was growing up. They've always been one of my favorite insects.

We had a pile of them around my area this summer, some green, some tan. Neat critters.

The praying mantis is a neat creature ! We also have here a related insect the walking stick. These are hard to see as they really look like a stick.

Great pix!! I really like Pryaing Mantisis (Manti?). They are fascinating creatures!!

You are originally from Russia no ? There are no Mantis there I assume ?

Yea they are lovely insects and my top favorite. It is funny , if I saw a spider that size I would run screaming , but a I love to have Mantis crawl on my arm , they are beautiful insects.
I have seen them in shades of green and tan/brown depending on thier surroundings.
Nice pics !

rebeltf: I am with you!! I love them too. And the are magnificant creatures. But, like you, if I saw a spider that size, I would run screaming!!!

A few years ago my daughter found a "spent" praying mantis cocoon in the bush outside her window. She kept it on her desk for a day or so, after which we found out it was only halfway spent. It was fun gathering up all those perfect tiny mantises to take back outside though.

Praying Mantis' are great. Whenever they're around, you can bet the number of "pesky" insects are low. And they're pretty visious too, which is why I guess those crazy monks at the Shaolin Temple developed a Kung Fu style out of how they fight.

As for one snagging a humming bird, I totally beleive it. We've got giant (8 +inches) praying mantis' here in Korea that regularly hunt and eat frogs.
