Hi folks,

Picked up a collection of knives recently and this was in the group. I know by the stamping it is pre-72 , but is there any way to tell closer to the exact year? Still learning the buck knife date codes and info. Sheath is not Buck , but very nice. Don't see too many 2 line buck Frontiersman and even fewer with serrations. Would be really cool to be able to narrow it down a bit more and have it turn out to be a birth year Buck(1971).
Thanks for any info folks.

Oh man , I have a long ways to go. I cant even get the model right. But 1971 only is cool.

As far as I know the only real difference between the 122 Nemo and the 124 Frontiersman were the sheaths and or the partially serrated blade.

Nice knife, I think that 1971 could be the year for your knife...122 was temporarily discontinued in 1971 so it is a 124. HTH, Preston

According to Joe Houser's article in the December2006 BCCI newsletter the 122 was temporarily discontinued late in 1971.

He would be the one that knows:thumbsup:, I just grabbed the handiest reference info(not by Joe) and it said in 1971...I stand corrected/amended. So it could be either, as you said, they are the same knife. Thanks, Preston

Yep, Nemo. The custom sheath shown was made for a lefty. The original sheath was a swivel leather sheath. I like the features of this model. DM

I have 124 marked blades with the same serrations. I think 122's and 124's made at the same time will have the same features. It's more about vintage than Nemo vs Frontiersman.

Yes, so true! The early two line 122/124 with the Phenolic handles were the exact same knife, the only difference that determined if it was a Nemo or a Frontiersman was the sheath and box. If you got the 122 Nemo it came with a plastic diver's sheath and box label. If you got the Frontiersman it came with a flap over leather sheath and box label. If you find one of these vintage knives and you don't have the sheath or box you will never know if it was sold as a Nemo or Frontiersman. In 1971 with the introduction of the new Buckarta micarta material the knives still only had the two line stamps but were now issued with a swinging leather sheath for both the 122/124 (the exact same knife) so now the only way to determine if you got the Nemo or the Frontiersman was the box label. So much fun, right!

There was also a 122 stamped version. Looking over Joe's notes that I have this version was only made in 1973.

Surf & Turf. Here is the Frontiersman mate to gedlicks Nemo. I also have the matching 122 somewhere. Personally, I would still attribute 3-line inverted to 1972 but as with all things Buck, + or - still seems to work.

Thanks everyone for the info. Early Buck info is a bit vague , but I must say this knife is very nice and is really growing on me.
Very hefty and built like a tank.
There were quite a few Buck knives in the collection but this one is my favorite.
