pre heat treat grinding question

OK I am retarted and missing a point somewhere but all I have read about the heat treat and temper I get the impression that while grinding prior to these processes you dont need to worry to terribly much about keeping the steel cool? because when tempering you heat it to X degrees to harden it, dont quote me on this but in the ballpark of critical temperature? am learning this in preperation but my point is I see posts about being careful not to overheat the steel while grinding. Am I correct to assume this is when the tempering is done and final finishing of the blade? because the way I see it if you can get a blade hot enough to ruin the steel prior to the temper it would be pretty impossible to handle it and grind.

Thanks in advanced

In the annealed condition [pre heat treat ] heating from grinding is won't do damage unless you might get it above the critical temperature but then you wouldn't be holding it !! After heat treat don't let it get above the tempering temperature .

What Mete said, I use a magnet to hold the blade while rough grinding and cool it to hang on to it. I would have to say that at the most I may get the blade in the 5-600 deg. F. range. Way below criticle. Most times I don't even get it that hot, cant realy hang on to it.:D
