How do you prep your knives for heat treat?
How do you make sure the knife you sent is the one you'll get back...sharpie?, tag it?

If you are discussing sending it off, such as to Paul Bos:

mark your name with one of those cheapo "buzz-engravers" with your name on the tang where you'll be covering it later. Wash with warm water/soap and rinse in straight hot water (dries easier hot), then dry with a clean rag. Avoiding fingerprints, wrap in newspaper.

Yep, I need to send my K.I.T.H knife off for heat treating. Actually I'd like to send off several and send the best one to the kith.
Thanks for the info...I never even thought to use a "buzzer".

Yep, Paul Bos asks you to mark the tang with your initials, and steel type.

I do that as a matter of course when making knives, as you can't believe how easy it is to mix one type of steel in with another, especially if they've been on the benchtop together for awhile. Also easy to forget which knife is what type of steel, and it gets worse as you get older.;)

Also, mark you steel stock AS you receive it. You won't remember what it is two months down the road. That's not only embarrassing, but can be costly. ;)

Dang, steel type!!! I knew I was forgetting something! :( It's been awhile since I sent any out...

Thanks, Mike!!

I also use one of those buzz-engravers to roughen up the tang on my CPM S60V knives before i glue the handle slabs on. I can stay away from the edge of the handle with it and i dont have to wory abourt rounding it ove like sometimes happens when i use sandpaper. It also makes it real easy to get under the dovetailed bolsters.

Hey,
I hadn't thought of that, When I sent to TKS, I drew outlines on a piece of paper and labeled each drawing with type of steel, and what specifics I wanted done. At the top of the sheet I put my address. That engraver is a good idea...Where could I find one of those? I haven't heard of them before.
Thanks
