I just took apart a (late?) 2011 Cabelas AG S30V and look what I saw! Looks like perfect for a (two spots??) 1/16 coil spring hmm... What else could it be? Particle traps?

Wonder why they'd punch a fairly large hole instead of just making a mark?
Sorry to put an end to any excitement, but those holes are for steel Identification only. No hole= 420HC, 1 hole = Sandvik, 2 holes = S30V.
This is a newer method to track blades so steels do not get mixed up.
Well, this gets a mark on them earlier in the process so there's less chance for mixup.....but I should think that just a mark would do it.
Why make a hole? Doesn't that provide a potential failure point?
humm i see lazor tang mark ... oh well knew it was comeing ... no bigge,,
ugh wander if any 110 blades have one hole!?!?!
and then they might be great for after market to use for spirngs too...
dont think failure on that part fo the blade is a issuue
Maybe true, Dave.......but I kinda think any hole anywhere in the blade is a potential fail point. As far back as these are it would be in a situation where there was torque or twisting stress on the blade.[
Maybe, maybe not......but still no actual NEED to make a big hole when a mark would do just fine.
Otherwise, a simple surface mark from the laser would do fine.....no hole required.
