I realize it's dependent on the model, but should one avoid buying one of those if you intend to use it ? Or, are the initial 1,000 generally more than enough to satisfy the collectors. Big models, I mean, like Contego, Adamas, or Onslaught.

There's usually no difference between a first and regular production and no change in value. I usually opt to wait until the non-numbered regular models arrive; no numbers on the blade is my favorite choice. The only models worth more and that generally continue to increase in value are the prototypes.

I don't like how large they etch the writing and numbers on the right side of the blade looks horribly tacky.

If there is nothing special about it like a limited edition version with special scales or blade steel that could possibly persuade me to live with the etching I'd 1000x prefer an unmarked blade.

Could be worse... You could have three different patent numbers, the steel type, the designer's name, and a crappily placed "Knife of the Month" date... All on one side.
