The best way to buy a new knife is by handling it first, but that is not always possible. I like to find the best picture of my latest "need" and use win98's imaging tool found under accessories to blow it up to full size. You can then get an idea of how it will fit your hand. If you're really an*l you can make a cardboard mockup of it.

I have made cardboard mock ups before from pictures and descriptions and once I carved one from a five gallon paint stir stick.
