I'm looking to buy a knife that I can use in the garden, on a hike and around a camp fire. I want something that will hold an edge and not be reluctant to take get one when sharpening. I also really can't break the bank on it. What would you gentlemen recommend?

I would recommend something off the spyderco line. Like a endura / delica / stretch. The vg-10 holds a great edge and has great corrosion resistance. They generally range from 60-70 bucks at the right place. If you'd like i can send you a website that has some killer prices on spyderco.

A bombproof knife for all occasions-----The BK&T KaBar BK2. It will outlast 3 generations of people, for about $60+ shipping.

Well for the uses you describe looks like a small/ medium fixed blade would be your best bet. Essee has a great line of reasonably priced fixed blades in many sizes with the best
warantee on the market. If your looking for a folder maybe the H.E.S.T folder by DPX. Might be out of your price range tho.

It depends what you call medium priced. You can get a Spyderco Para-Military 2 for around $92 plus shipping. If you want a lower price point, +1 to the endura or delica.

ESEE-3 sounds perfect for what you are looking for, or one the the Bucks. If you really want to go inexpensive, but still serviceable, check out the Mora line. I would go with a fixed blade for these chores.

...Not sure what you mean by "midrange." Around here I'd say midrange means $100-$250.

Spyderco ParaMilitary 2 is a fantastic midrange... really exceptional at ~$100. As for a cheapo, I would look no further than the Kershaw Skyline. Great knife for $30... having both, I would easily recommend the Para2 first... good 'ol S30V... but at least the Skyline is super easy to sharpen.

+1 for the Skyline and Endura recommendations. For fixed, a Mora would be a great choice as stated already.

The coldsteel combat classics in aus 8 are around 50-60 and the new leatherneck will probably be close to that.

Fixed blade: Becker, Mora, Buck--all good knives with a selection of affordable models.
Hard Use Folder: Ontario RAT-1, Ka-Bar Mule, Cold Steel Pocket Bushman, Buck 110, Gerber Gator--all in the sub $50 range and easy to sharpen.
Light/Medium Folder: Byrd Cara Cara 2, Victorinox Trekker or Alox Farmer, large Opinel. Spyderco Delica/Endura for a few bucks more...

Good luck! :)

In the garden you might need something like a hori hori. http://www.cleanairgardening.com/horihoriknife.html
That might be too much garden knife, for camping.

Depends on what you need in your garden, problem will be with edge retention as far as digging, sand and rocks will be hard on the edge.

I'd get a hori hori for the garden, and a fixed blade for camping, BK2, ESEE 4, or whatever you want.

Get yourself a Buck 119. You can find some sweet deals assuming you are close to a local Wal Mart. It is a remarkable knife and does a great many things quite well although it is not a chopper. Mine has seen much field use not to mention numerous tasks in the kitchen. It is always nice in the mits and takes a decent edge. The newer edge profile cuts better in my estimation than my ancient Buck 119 that my father gave me over thirty years ago.

What about a Buck 110 for a folder that you will always have with you and a Ka-Bar for camping and hunting.

+1 for that. I would also give the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman some consideration. At it's price, you could buy two and dedicate one for the garden and one for camping.

The CS Pocket Bushman was the first knife to come to mind when I read the initial post. Saw that several people had suggested it before I posted. You know, there are many great thinkers here at BF!:)

Chalk another vote up for the Spyderco Delica/Stretch/Endura. Stout overall designs and the VG-10 blade steel takes a keen edge readily, and holds that edge well.
