Preferred belts for Ti?

I pretty much destroyed a new 3M AO 36 grit belt grinding some 6/4 Ti a few days ago. What's the preferred type of belt for grinding Ti? I'm looking for something that is actually sharp enough to cut the Ti instead of pushing it aside like AO does, as well as something that will last reasonably long. I'm just profiling 0.09 6/4 for folders. Also, fast or slower for Ti, or like steel is it dependant on the grit of the belt?

Cut the titanium as close as possible to your line then run belt slow with40 grit then to 120. fit bolsters and handle mat then 220 and finer. It will eat belts fast at high speed and create a fire hazard. Have a few holes in a bad part on my jeans. :D

Best belt I've found for titanium is a 80 grit 3M 967 cubitron. I run them slow for ti. These belts will cut and cut and cut. I profile all my liners on a 10'' contact wheel with a work rest, profilling ti on a flat platten is murder for the belt. I've been grinding ti for about 10 years and tried all the belts, this works good for me but is not the only way to "get er done".

Forget about aluminum oxide when grinding titanium. If you want to grind effectivity you are going to have to buy expensive belts.

I agree with Don. We use lots of 3M 967 except we use the 60 grit. I also like a Klingspor but I don't have the number handy. Grind at a slow speed. I adjust the speed so I just get an occasional spark. The advantage of grinding slow is the belts last longer, vanadium is not released into the air in the smoke and you have fewer titanium fires.

Well, I was doing AO at the highest speed, so go figure! I have to order some new belts so it looks like a 60-80 cubitron will be added to the list. Great...

try the Gator Belt's !! they really cut nicely . i usually rough it with a 36 grit ,then change to a used gator for finishing . work's well for me .

To quote Brother Chuck, who knows more about titanium than any 100 of the rest of us put together!
Brother Chuck, my friend, my pal, my ti supplier, my stabilized handle material supplier, my advice giver, and what ever other things I can't remember at this particular time, you and Chiro Steve must be usin the wrong a/o, hey, I just had a thought, since noone likes a/o bels, lets nick name em aholes, be kind of an inside joke, k?? Antways, you guys are either usin the wrong aholes or runnin em at the wrong speed!
I guess I'm the only one that grinds with aholes.
I grind my blades, handles, ti, brass, bronze, micarta, g10, ivory, antler, marble, yes, I groiund some marble once, everything with aholes and they produce fine for me. I buy a German brand belt, the name slips my mind right now, lots of things slip my mind lately. I forgot to to take my meds the other day and the next day I was meaner than a gribblet. If I'd gone out I'm sure I woulda gotten arrested or killed someone, I mean someone look at me wrong and blammo, I'd ,,,, I'm ok now.
Anyway.
I grind titanium with ahole belts and they do just fine.
Ha, I remember now, Carbo Schroeder, that's the brand name.
Speed is the kicker, ya gotta run the belt the right speed and keep the ti cool otherwise ya just melt it.
I do the rough grinding with a 36 grit too. Man do those things sl;ing crap at ya. :D
