Hello everyone!

New to the forum and excited to be here! I just received my Ka Bar BK7 and am loving it! I live in a humind climate that can become wet (I live on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada) and I have read that the BK7 can rust quickly so I plan on always keeping my BK7 nice and oiled. What would you guys suggest as an oil for this type of climate which gives my BK7 a long and rust free life? I purchased some mineral oil (could only find NF grade) is this suitable to protect my knife? What would the optimal choice be?

Thanks for your help guys!

Yes, that mineral oil will be fine, an 'oil' which is known for hanging on is great, and there are as many options as you can imagine. I like Balistol, and good ol 3n1 oil. Both work fine, but Balistol has a wider range of uses--google it and you'll find a bunch of sources. Good luck, and enjoy your knife out there on the island.

For the cutting edge of a carbon steel knife there isn't a lot that can be done unless you like CONSTANT maintenance. The knife comes coated, so until that wears out you won't have to worry about rust.

That said, the absolute easiest way to cost the edge is simply petroleum jelly. A tub enough to last a lifetime (mine has done edges at least 100 times, whole blades at least 50 times, and I even did about 10 katana blades and is not even close to 1/3 gone) is just a few dollars, and unlike most knife/gun coatings can be used for other things, like protecting a burn.

awesome thanks for the info guys! I was wondering if theres anything I can get to "rust proof" my bk7?

Thanks!
