Prejudices and Pondering 15" AK's and WWII's and Things in General

I admit it - when I first encountered HI's khukuris I instantly developed some very strong prejudices. I loved the looks of Gelbu's, Sirupatis, Chitlangis and Chainpuris.

I did not like the looks of the WWII's or the AK's. Well, that not's totally true. The AK's weren't bad looking, but I thought the WWII's were definitely on the homely side, looking more akin to something that might be seen spreading mayonaisse or mustard on a deli sandwich.

After some time I found myself with my brother-in-law's Bura WWII in my hand and I had to admit that I liked it. Bought an 18" AK and found that it brought a grin to my face every time I hefted it (eventually sold it and am kicking myself VERY hard for that now, but I was on a mission to reduce duplication of capabilities at the time.)

I just received a 15" AK that I bought as a lark really, again not seeing much need for one because I am quite well-equipped in the 15" range of Khuks; but since they had been so highly praised here and the price was right (one of Uncle Bill's blems, though to be honest, the only blem is a slight wrinkel on the scabbard leather - the Khuk is in perferct condition).

But I was once again surprised. Although this 15-incher looks very much like a 15" BAS, it clearly has more power packed into the similarly-sized frame. Kinda makes me think of a snub-nosed big-bore revolver or an Officer's Model-sized 1911A1. It inspires enormous confidence and there is no doubt from its heft that it will cut with incredible effectiveness.

I still prefer my BAS by the tiniest of margins, and I think that is because the handle on my BAS is a bit longer and fits my hand a tad better because of it, but I think that if I had that 15" AK blade mated to that BAS handle I'd say that I probably found the ideal 15" Khukuri for the kind of use I'd imagine for it.

Also as I mentioned elsewhere, the best feeling Khukuri I now own and out of the nearly two dozen HI khuks I've owned, is my Kumar-crafted 16" WWII - and it is without a doubt the homeliest Khuk I've ever owned, and really, probably seen really (grin). I mean, it REALLY looks like a spatula found in a sandwich shop (LOL). But man, does it ever feel great in hand and I can tell that it will cut with a lot more power than it appears at first blush.

And a Bura 18" WWII ranks somewhere in my top five.

I guess the moral of this story is, don't be prejudicial against a given Khukuri type based on its looks alone (like I was). Be adventurous! Try some Khuks you wouldn't ordinarily try. You won't be disappointed.

PS: My daughter snagged the new 15" AK. The moment she picked it up her face split into this huge grin and I knew I'd have trouble trying to get it back from her. Good thing I still prefer my 15" BAS. :D

Good advice all around...and if you ever decide to get rid of another of those 8" AKs, give me a shout. ;)

It is really cute. :D

(Darn my too fast and too sloppy typing)

(8" AK edited to properly show it as an 18-incher)

Don, Good to see you back.

My impression of the WWII is much the same as your;
bent spatula.
Still haven't broken down to try one.

I'm with you there. The BAS I had I really loved the shape of the handle. Not as great in diam as an AK and then with the nice flare at the end you can kind of use as a pivot when swinging.

Hmmm. Two of us with a similar assessment. I wonder if we could persuade a Kami into making such a hybrid, maybe call it the BASAK.

Shop One ww2's have a more traditional blade profile. I agree, the BG ww2's remind me of a whale's shape, big and blunt lookiing up front. But the way they handle makes me forget that. And for chopping, the added bulge extends the sweet spot forward. For stabbing, it's akin to the big bore cartridges: It goes quicker to full width up front.

The 16.5" ww2's don't talk to me, they SING!!!

I am gonna have to get myself one of those 16" WWII's sometime. I got a 16" AK and used it a bunch before I cleaned it up and gave it away as a gift, afterwards I promised that the thing I would buy to replace it would be a ~16" WWII.

That and a Malla.
And a large Tibetan Sword, and a 18" screaming Kobra, and a UBE... nevermind... yall get the idea...

My 16.5" WW II has been my favorite kukuri- and knife- since I first got it (along with another HI, as I recall). I have never liked the feel of sirupatis, for some reason.

The Ganga Ram is just too damn big for me, but the 18" AK I bought for a friend feels really good. I think my next projected kuk is a 15 or 16.5" AK.

I've had a number of Sirus:

One 15" that is real sweet.

Two 18-inchers, both felt real nice, but one especially so.

Three 20-inchers I think, and all of them were just "okay". I think there must be a law of diminishing returns on them the larger they get, at least for me.

I've had four Kobras: three 20-inchers and one 25". I can't seem to get into those. They all feel like they trying to twist my wrist off. A pity because I think they look awesome, but they don't seem to be a good fit for me.

It's funny, I've always lusted after the WWIIs but have never spared a moment for the BAS. Not sure why, it just never interested me, although I must admit I've never actually handled one either. Sirupatis are the same thing, I've tried a 12" and a 20", but both left me blah. Gave away the 12" and probably should do the same with the 20". Gelbu Specials, however, are second only to WWIIs in the lust chart for the standard types.

SamuraiDave, we Texans really need to have a full khonvention one of these days. I have a 16.5" chiruwa WWII with finger groves that you might like to try out.

Texans like the AK Bowie!

*and the gelbu specials, the jkm1, rod allen hanshee, UBE, chainpuiri, chitlangi, dui chirra and sirupatis.

the truth is i pretend to only love the gelbu specials to keep myself from spending all my money on these things.
i am on a buying hiatus for a month or two.
i got paid three days ago, but i cant spend a dime, it all goes to my credit card.

Yes we should have a Khonvention... problem is that I am a full time student doing my best to stay out of trouble and on schedule for graduation. (I have a problem with this, rather a Professor last semester had a problem with me.)

Anyways, A khukri Khonvention in Texas...hmmm... I want to attend but cannot commit or have any position of responsibility :o . I am really really really really really really really busy with school (I should be sleeping right now.)

Just be sure to envite Burk... the man who is responsible for the Burke Special. A man that owns antique khukris that will make you wet your pants with what they have to tell you (Ask Sarge about it sometime).

I've said it before, but the 15" BAS's just don't turn me on. I don't know why, but they don't. Even when the kamis made some oversized 16"ers, those were better, fairly nice in fact, but...

The BAS's appeal to me in that they're affordable, very high-quality knives. My brother might get one for his next birthday (especially if they gossip about strangers in Hungarian as Rusty as suggested). That said, I'm very fond of the Ang Kholas. I have a 15" w/horn that's just perfect; an 18" Chiruwa w/wood that (aside from a tight scabbard and funky karda) is near perfect; and a Garud that gets all bellicose and tells me "I'm a Chickenhawk looking for a chicken! Are you a chicken? <sniff sniff>". They rule the cutlery roost.
