I see some Premier knives made with Soligen, German steel. Anyone have
any of these knives and if so how do you like them? thanks.

There was a time when the fact that a knife was made with Solingen steel was significant. It is no longer. High quality steels are now made all over the world.

I am unfamiliar with "Premier Knives".

Are you talking about a company in a Soligen, Germany called Premier Knives, or are you talking of the premier knives manufactured in Soligen, Germany, by existing companies? The former I've not heard of, the latter definately includes Boker.

Thanks for the info fellas. I have an old hunting knife and it's stamped with Premier, then
it says under it Solingen Germany

In that case
-take pics of the knife.
show a closeup of the blade stamp and a pics of the overall knife plus a closeup of the handle.
-put them on photobucket
-start a thread in Bernard Levine's Knife Collecting & Identification

-ask the pros there for information about the knife

At one time Puma was sold at A&F, then the best sporting goods company in the world. They are OK but not at the same level

i have two old knives from Germany one of them is a dagger with a 5 1/2 inch blade and a 3 7/8 inch handle and is marked schrieber Germany. The other is an old skinning knife with a very upswept blade that is 5 1/8 inch blade and a 4 1/2 inch handle and is marked, Rich ABR Herder solingen Germany and the blade is marked, Original Buffalo Skinner. both knives have bone handles, brass guards ( the dagger has a double sided one ) and steel, pewter or aluminum pommel's. ( im not sure which)

I think that the higher end Bökers are truly good knives - of course people in the USA suffer from the exchange ratio making them rather expensive.
And for the traditional knives, Robert Klaas makes lovely perfectionist knives.
There is still quite some quality coming out of Solingen.

Hi Dagon,

AFAIR the complete Klaas manufacturing was moved to China or Taiwan some years ago.

Of course there are many very good quality knives made by German manufacturers, in Germany and in another countries in Far East (Böker Plus in Taiwan for example) - You know it also, I saw Your YT knife rewievs, my two last hits are both Exskeliburs, I'm very glad with them.

Not only the exchange ratio is the problem for USA people - however I don't know if it's really a problem, there is a Böker USA, and I saw some knives in American online shops, some prices in $ are lower than those here in Germany in Euro.

Also work costs are quite high here and prices of comparable knives made of similar materials are higher than in the USA.

I recall Premier brand knives being marketed quite extensively in Canada during the late 60's. on. They were a classic 'Hardware Store' knife that was frequently marketed along side Buck. I believe that the entire line was manufactured in Solingen Germany as this was before the outsourcing to the orient. Most of their blades were carbon steel. As a knife line, they were not bad, not Buck, but not bad. Premier did have an extensive collection of models from slip-joints to fixed blades.

Well the cheaper Hen & Rooster are, but I thought that a number of knives were still made in Solingen, for example my Monolith 2000. i must check this.

Anyway as you say, asian production can be really good and I'm glad you seem to like your Exskeliburs as much as I do. I think these are amongst the most interesting knives on the market.

Regarding exchange ration: the China & Taiwan-made Boker Plus products tend to be real cheap in the USA, but I had the impression that the German-made weren't - indeed work cost is an important factor.

I have a premier knife made in soligen germany yes the have good steel I have several soligen germany knives. Boker comes from there puma lots of good brands. All the knife steel comes from the same plants in soligen maybee not now but 35 years ago and earlier did.

i've got a rich abrherder knife made in solingen germany with a diamond looking symbol, on the blade. & it's a wooden handle. if you find it post a picture and let me know what its worth.

When I read this I thought you were mistaken since the cheaper knives like a Trance or Exskelibur I usually look at cost more in Europe then in the US.

But just looked up some knives over €150 and they are indeed MUCH more expensive on the US site then on the German site.

r-winter and xsmotherxmexx, don't piggyback on another knife question thread. It just confuses everyone and your question gets lost in the shuffle. Follow the advice knarfeng gave:

-take pics of the knife.
show a closeup of the blade stamp and a pics of the overall knife plus a closeup of the handle.

Yes I have an original buffalo skinner, possible 1955 model. I and all my friends think it is a fine knife that holds a great edge.I would buy another anytime. As a matter of fact I found this forum while I was looking for a Soligen knife dealer. Buy one and enjoy! If anyone knows of a Soligen dealer in Canada please let me know.
