We've been having a lot of discussion on the "prepper" thing on other forums I visit... I'm old enough to remember perhaps the original notion, the Cold-War inspired "fallout shelter" fad of the 50s.
We actually had friends that built one into their new tract home back then. Like all such, it eventually became a walk in junk closet...
Likewise, I was in my early teens when Robert DePugh started up his "Minutemen" thing, the original "militia" outfit (not counting, perhaps, those lads who were shooting at the Redcoats...)
And I recall a similar-to-the-Prepper thing going on in the early 70s, when civilization was supposed to collapse momentarily and certain folks were buying little reinforced cabins out in the boonies..
I can't recall what doom was supposed to be occuring that time....
Anyway, as one who's been in law enforcement for a long (40+) years and who's been through natural disasters and power outages and flood-induced evacuation... It's certainly a good idea to have an "emergency kit' with all the stuff we normally talk about all the time on the forum. I recall having to drive about 20 miles to find batteries for my flashlight during the three-day-long power outage some years ago. Even Walmart was sold out!
However, investing a great deal of time and money and resources into preparing for some dimly-imagined doomsday seems...A bit much.
