It's funny that I've been in a world of "tactical" communications for several years and never got my amateur radio license; one of my goals this year. A very good friend of mine since we were pre-teens (actually named my son after him) has really immersed himself in ham radio. He wrote a great little fiction novel. I pre-read some of his on-line copies, but never read the whole story. My wife just saw he published it and picked it up for my son. Just passing on a decent read if you're interested in ham radio...it is a little technical, but aimed at teens to get them interested so it’s not completely geek-speak. Since the author is also very much into personal preparation, he included a good taste of that as well and how ham radio can be a very important asset to your preparation toolbox. What I liked was his "bonus content" section at the end which listed several "basic" aspects of being prepared, most with a radio flavor, but inlcuded some discussion on "what should be in your backpack", "what is ferrocerium", uses of zip ties, 550-cord, several tips regarding "urban" preparation (gas shut offs, security, plans on leaving your residence, etc.); all pretty basic, but great for the young reader and sparking that initial interest…
