Preparing Strop

I have read different post with conflicting points of views, some say load strop with heavy amounts others say very little. I would like to get some feed back on this. Also, method of loading strop, dry compound only or, mixed compound with a liquid and apply to strop? (saw a post awhile back that mixed compound with (I think) mineral spirits). Any opinions or input on preparing strop would be appreciated.

I heated my leather strop with a hairdryer, only took a few seconds and it was warm enough to rub the block of compound onto it. I used the rough unfinished side. Then it took about 5-10 minutes to get enough of it applied to cover up all the leather 'hairs' and then smoothed it out with my fingers and a knife to get it flat. Its still a little rough and uneven, I think cardboard would be better.

I do just enough to cover it, then wipe off the excess and let it dry for a while before using. I use handamerican CrO2 gel and add whatever else abrasives needed to it (usually diamond paste). I think it is mineral oil based, but not sure.
