It never fails. A hike is planned and I start to get ready for the hike the night before.

I crack open a cold beer at 1300 hours , open the gear cabinets and start to pick out gear to take.

first its the pack....which pack do i take........?

after 3 hours of grabbing packs, sling bags, waist bags, combat vests, and a few beers later I finally settle on the pack i want.

then its choosing the water carrier.....do i go with my canteen? my camelback storm? my KleenCanteen?

a few beers later, and much weighing of the pros and cons of each water system, I finally pick one.

then its on to the fire kits............I have about 10 of them......do i pick the traditional one...the modern one, the mini one, the mega kit....etc.....

an hour later i have a fire kit picked out.

crack a cold beer and start figuring out which FAK to take......am i hiking with experienced friends with their own FAKS? INexperienced friends with no gear? kids? GF? alone? crap! this calls for another beer.

an hour later i've made a whole new FAK for the hike.

lets see....food........what do i take....hiking alone? hiking with others? hiking with diabetics? better crack a beer and think some more.....

ok throw a powerbar and a sammich into the pack.

then its time for picking the knives. This could well involve several cases of beer.......WHICH KNIFE DO I TAKE? and how many? do i take my traditional woods knives? my combat/tactical knives? my production knives? my customs? my semi customs?

three to five hours later i have 3 folders, 2 neck knives, 2 backpack shoulder strap knives, 5 choppers, 2 belt knives, and 3 more folders in my pockets.

by now its 2 cases of beer past 2100 hours, and i have finally geared up for sundays hike.

wait....better grab that other knife, haven't used it in awhile.....

spoken like a true Canadian!

......appears as if you wouldn't need a fire kit....just "spark" your breath and exhale. ;)

Ahhhhh, you had one too many beers, eh? I can tell because you forgot to pick out which pair of boots you're going to wear......

Ya have to respect the process, I keep my backpack half full pretty much all the time, I drink beer and think about where I want to hike, and should I take rain gear, just in case.

beer in a bag, because without beer, camping is just sleeping in the woods.
