I just took delivery of a new (Buck)knife and intend to keep it in the safe as part of my collection. Should I leave it in the box in its original packing? Or should I take it out, inspect it, and wipe it down with CLP or similar protectant? What should be done to insure it is safe from rust and yet retains its maximum collector value?

One of the most important things you can do is make sure it is separtae from the leather sheath, if it has one. Over time, the chemicals used in tanning the leather will turn a brass component green. I keep mine in a safe with bags of desicant. Although my knives are not rusting, I can not say for sure that it works because we don't get much moisture out here anyway.
Hope this helps,

Thanks Joe. Its a Limited Edition "Running Deer" Vanguard which I ordered before getting aquainted with Larry and joining the B.C.C. I'll head to the safe and separate the two.

By the way...is there supposed to be a limited edition number or certificate with this knife?

I have had good success with a light grade of motor oil (great anti-rust stuff in motor oil) and brown paper bags. I just cut up a brown paper bag to get sheets pf paper, schlobber motor oil on the metal and roll it up. Definately keep it AWAY from leather!
