the purpose?

well, you can stuff a lot of gear in a little bag. not sure what size you would need for a tent. and that is an odd sized sleeping bag. 10'x10'????

my mummy bag from mountain hardware fits in to a compression sack that is roughly 6" in diameter, and 8" long.

It's hard to say what size you'll need. You want the smallest one you can stuff the item into, that way you'll get the most compression. I doubt getting one for the tent will do much good as there's really nothing to compress there. They are designed for something more 'puffy' like a sleeping bag which has material that is compressible.

A word of advice....do not keep the bag stored in the compression sack, you will ruin the fill (down or synthetic). It's fine to use one when you need it but the rest of the time the bag should be stored either in a large storage bag or hanging loose.

A compression sack is simply a stuff sack with some straps on it that tightens around the contents. They are typically used, as stated above, to make a puffy object smaller and more packable. Also like above they are not intended for long term storage.

I would suggest that you not use one on a tent. I assume you mean for the fabric portion only and not for the poles. Tent fabric is usually coated with waterproofing material and compressing and folding the material would be detrimental. For your sleeping bag, I would use the smallest compression bag that fits the sleeping bag into it when uncompressed.

Don't forget its a bad idea to store sleeping bags, coats and other high loft products in compression sacks long term, it crushes the pile and reduces the insulation value.

I'd suggest not getting the words 'purpose' and 'prepuce' mixed up in every day conversation!!

Indeed :D

I find I use regular stuff sacks alot more than the compression sack I have.
Its a nice size to fit in my day pack when stuffed full with a jacket and tarp or something.

Also the snugpak sleeping bags come with a comp. sack thats pretty handy.
