My father became 70 years old this year, the first of october. Still in good health, luckily! I wanted to give him a special gift, as a "thank you" for all he, and my mother, did for me and my brother over the years.

Last spring, during a visit to dutch knifemaker Gudy Van Poppel, while we were discussing some future projects, I got the brilliant idea to ask Gudy to make a folder for my father. I know he's fond of traditional French "Laguiole" folders, so that was what I asked Gudy to make.

This is what he came up with, and I can tell you it made my father VERY happy!

Damascus blade & bolsters, sambar stag handle slabs, fileworked liners, textured backspring, and where the "fly" would be on a traditional Laguiole, Gudy made his logo.

OK, enough words, on to the pics!

very nice Jos!

Rudy did a GREAT job Jos! Your father will love it i'm sure.

Congrats on a good idea to celebrate your dad's 70th birthday.

I'm sure your dad loved it! I know I would. What a wonderful, thoughtful gift. I might forward the thread link to my sons ........ :D

I love the whole package, but especially the dates engraved inside! I recently found the "wire board" of a piano where the original owners wrote in pencil the name/date/and weight of the person I assume it was bought for. The inclusion of a date made it much more special for me- as I'm sure it will to the new owners decades down the road, be it your family or collectors yet to come.

Thank you for sharing.

Sweet knife - not hard to see why he'd be real happy with that as a gift. Thanks for giving us a peek.

Roger
