Here's the first of many soon to come pictures of this incredible design, from Paul Ehlers. The first 25 MAX's will be numbered. Every MAX (ltd. and std. editions) are inscribed with "EHLERS" in the heavily contoured handle slabs.

Numbered, Ltd. edition...$350 (WOOOOOPS....$325.....sorry....edited as of NY Custom Knife Show) Sorry.

Std. edition...$295

Enjoy and see you at the show!!!

Interesting little tool there. The edge angle is off what I would want for chopping, but should give very strong slicing ability and of course extreme point presentation. Handle shape looks very good, checkering a nice detail.

If this piece is used for It`s intended purpose, I doubt that who ever is at the receiving end. will ask about blade geometery.

For the 300 dollars the standard edition costs, what steel do I get? What are the handle slabs made of? What is the coating? I love my my vietnam hawk, and RR spike. Great values. But if this is coated 1095, and mincarta, I think its over the top price wise. Actually I wish it were of those materials for about 200 dollars.

The MAX is fully precision machined from 0-1, .1875 or 3/16th stock, and parkerized. Every arc, bevel, and radius are perfectly executed.

MAX features two razor sharp, saber ground bevels on an extremely well thought out design for close-up utility cutting work, as well as CQB. The handles are linen micarta, radiused, hatched, and dished to reflect Paul's ergonomy. The butt features a lanyard hole, and the package is topped off with a quality concealex belt sheath w/TEKLOK from Survival Sheath Systems.

They SOLD OUT at the show today and our website will be updated with new images, printed specs, and online ordering for MAX this coming week.

Thanks to all for your remarks...

I truly believe Andy derives pleasure from his torturous ways.

Chalk me up Andy!

Paul is a great guy. Max is a cool piece of equipment.
I enjoyed visiting with Paul and his lovely wife at the show.

It's WAYYYY too expensive for what it is. Cool enough, but come on... US$295 for a laser cut, CNC'ed piece of O1 and some Micarta?

Based on the materials used and the work, it would seem that it is very pricy, and such would be the case indeed if someone was to simply copy the above design. However when pricing an original product you have to consider the time spent in R&D.

As of late ATC seems to be stepping up the product line in regards to materials and construction as well as exploring many different approaches and perspectives design wise. This takes time and effort from skilled people. If you want a simple copy then you can get it cheap, but if you want to see small run innovation, which is what ATC is offering, then you have to pay for it.

Note we are also not seeing wall-hanger class blades, while they might be high end custom designed, Andy has given every indication that they are indeed working class blades and fully supported by ATC.

I appreciate your perception here Cliff, as you have outlined all too well what I feel ATC is all about!

In terms of MAX, let me take a moment to describe why the price point where it is....

MAX is a Paul Ehlers' design. It marks the first time any of his designs have been accessible to the public at a price point less than several thousands...AND as a functional, production piece...Paul's custom pieces have historically been made by Gil Hibben and Paul Fox...purchased by celebs and heads-of-state. An Ehlers' piece accessible by all (comparitively speaking) is certainly a cutlery industry first.

MAX, the NG Ranger Spike, and some new products coming very soon are completely machined...no laser jet cutting, water jet cutting, or outsourcing other than heat-treatment...as a result, this consumes a great deal of time in terms of execution...it also results in a perfectly executed high performance piece that we can make in small runs...which is one of the reasons why ATC can be flexible with new models brought to market in record time.

On the performance issue of machining vs. laser cutting, there is no heat treat distortion at the edge bevel, producing consistency in performance from piece to piece...and they are ALL the same...exactly the same. Water-jet cutting produces very similar results, but in most cases, requires large runs to justify machine time and cost.

MAX is a totally unique design...to our knowledge, there is nothing like it...while there have been a few references to the UUK, MAX stands alone in terms of its design specificity and performance applications...it works as a knife, or a small Hatchet, or a dagger....VERRRRRRY unique.

We feel MAX is a true piece of "designer" cutlery, offering quality performance, unique design, and true value to the owner.

Hope this helps!

Wow Andy, that was a well-reasoned, well-thought response, and it didn't sound the least bit defensive. I'm definitely impressed by the products offered by ATC, and it's nice to see the owner is such a great guy. :) I would simply add, if you don't feel it's worth it, there are lots of cheaper tools on the market. I don't think Andy and ATC will have any trouble selling this model.

BTW Andy, did you get my email from about a week ago? I didn't want to bother you with a bunch of followups.
