Preserving blade etching on GEC knife

I've just received a couple of new GEC knives and am enjoying using them.

One aspect that I dont enjoy is how hard it is to preserve the blade etch. These are Northfield knives, and i want them to remain highly polished, but constantly wiping down the blade, and occasionally using some metal polish to keep the patina at bay, is made so much more difficult by the blade etching. I would find the maintenance of the blade so much easier if the entire blade could simply be polished using a robust method, without having to carefully steer the polish around the etching the entire time.

I would consider ignoring the blade etch, but it seems most people preserve it.

What do other people do? Any tips?

Polish with a hard backing that doesn't wash out the etch.
