Presidio vs. Griptilian

Griptillian... Best all round user in my opinion.. Light weight and more durable... I used an old one as a throwing knife for a few days on and off... It was not harmed at all and locked up perfect afterwards....
Its my favorite Benchmade... Especially for the price..

I've got them both. The Presidio is one of my favorite folders.

The Griptilian is better value and lighter

The Presidio has a stronger handle with steel liners, thicker blade.

My vote is for the Presidio. Hold both though, and come up with your own conclusion so that you won't be disappointed.

While the grip is a great knife and a great value, I just dont like plasticy feeling handles. So my vote is for the presidio by default.

+1

The Grip is the more reasonable knife. The Presidio is my favorite for its ergonomics and most of all looks.

The 520 looses because it has the bader price - value ratio.

I've got both. My 525 gets very little use. I don't like aluminium handles and I never feel like I can get a good grip on the knife when I'm using it (that may just be me).

OTOH... I still give a good bit of use to my Grips and I'm considering adding another one to the family. Like Matt said... they are double tough, easy for me to hold, and one of the best $ values going, IMAO.

I love my Grips, but I think I prefer the Presidios. Especially in the Mini versions. I sold my mini-grip becuse it would cut the palm of my hand as I flicked it closed. The presidio is a tad bit bigger and doesn't do that.

I can't really compare the full size cause I've got the auto Presidio.

I'd love a sheepsfoot blade grip in ZDP189/Ti handle. That'd be my perfect knife.

The Presidio 520 pushed the Griptilian out of my pocket about a year ago----just simply a bigger stronger knife---and yes it costs more to do that.

I also have a 525---but rarely carry it just cause I prefer the bigger knife.

The 520 and 525 are the Grip and Mini-Grip on steroids.

Presidio for me. It is not just the blade shape but the main feature for me is the handle. I'm a big fan of the metal and the texture.

....and if it came in a tool steel that would be even better.

I've wondered about this, but I always figured aluminum handles (Presidio) were more durable than glass-filled nylon (Griptilian). Any materials-science experts want to comment...?

I only own a Grip, but I would've bought the Presidio if the price difference wasn't so big.

Here is my 2 cents. I have owned the 525, 520 and some of the Grips.
I like alumn. handled knives but did not care for it in the 520 or the 525. The Grips are just as good but lighter in weight and cost. Blade shape is fairly close on both. The Grips are strong enough to do the job. It just boils down to how much $$ you are willing to part with and which you consider the best for you. Either way you get a good knife. I'm partial to my 940 and 960 and my 555 with the oval hole. I really like Glock pistols and I don't think that the plastic means cheap.

I rarely carry my 520. It is a great knife and I love the feel of it in the hand - but that thing is heavy!
I am more often found carrying a 551,552 or 550HG. They have as much cutting power as the 520 and offer all the strength that I will ever need from a folder.

about the grips handles. Yes at first i was a bit turned off by them, they do feel like brittle plastic. But after using my grip for a while, i realized that they are very strong and very lightweight. For the size and strength of the grip, you also get a very light knife.

however, if you prefer a more substantial handle, then ya i can see why someone would want a different knife.

I'm with Steven Andrews above: I have a mint 520 that I almost never carry, I just got a 551 and with clip removed carry it in the coin pocket of my jeans.

I really don't mind the "clack" at all, and love the blade shape. To me, it's the ultimate utility knife.

And it's pretty near indestructible too. +1 for the Grips!
