Pressure on edge pro apex?

less than you expect....

Enough to simply seat the stone against the blade so it doesn't chatter at all. If you make the blade move, you are applying far too much.

When I first started, I had an iron grip holding the knife itself and was using too much pressure on the stones. Over some practice, you barely have to hang onto it at all.

I found out that my best edges come from the lighter touch.

Start with crappy knives, kitchen knives are easiest I think. They have a flatter grind vs some of the whackier ones some knives have...so they lay on the blade table better. I run 320 -> 600 -> 1000 generally and can easily push cut paper when it all comes together properly.

If you haven't yet, watch the DVD it came with.

When I get to my polishing stones (5k, 10k, and up), I actually hold the knob above my hand, so that I am hopefully able to maintain the same pressure on the whole stroke. With the stone arm extended, you have much more leverage and pressure than with it retracted. It's something that I pay attention to if I'm going for TP slicing edges.

What pressure do I need to apply on the edge pro.

Al

If you have not already done so, it would behoove you to take a few minutes and watch teh DVD that came with your machine. Or you can simply watch the videos online via YT.

I just use three fingers on the knob, with enough pressure to keep the stone in contact with the blade. No more than that. It feels like what I imagine one would hold a violin bow... somewhat delicately.

IOW, let the abrasive do the work!:p:thumbup::p

I actually havent got the DVD as the postage here in the UK was so great that I could only afford kit #1 and there is no DVD included. I watched the web videos over and over but couldnt find anything on pressure.

Al.

Thanks for the answers though.
