Pressurized alcohol stoves

I just had an article on pressurized (and unpressurized) alcohol stoves published in the online magazine Modern Survival (www.modernsurvival.net). I review the Brasslite Micro and go over some designs for homemade models.

Though they don't provide the btu's per ounce of a gas stove, alcohol stoves have their niche. I find them convenient, quiet inexpensive (so I can have one in every bug out bag) and capable of long term storage. White gas degrades rapidly, but alcohol has a long shelf life.

Check it out! You have to subscribe to read everything, but my article's free for a while.

Thanks for the link Bob. Another one added to my favourites. Sheesh my morning computer read is getting up towards 90 minutes. I'm in danger of becoming a chairborne outdoorsman!

Nothing wrong with that :D

One of the cooler things about alcohol stoves is that so little investment is needed to try one out: just a can or bottle of alcohol, and maybe a few bucks' worth of materials to make a stove. I suggest a variation of the Spice Tin Stove described in my article. I plan to make another, after the failure described in the text. I'll use 16 holes measuring .024-.025" (the diameter of a small sewing needle). If I still get leakage around the lid, I'll add holes, *A FEW AT A TIME,* until the internal pressure is reduced enough, but not too much.

An alcohol stove would be appropriate in a city dweller's "survival kit" for power failures and other temporary emergencies. Alcohol's safer to store than white gas or kerosene. YOU STILL NEED GOOD VENTILATION FOR THE USE OF ANY STOVE, HOWEVER. We want to avoid the tragedies that occur all too frequently, with people using camp stoves and other carbon monoxide producing appliances indoors and suffocating.

Have fun,
