Well things have change a lot in the last couple of months i see a pattern of not returning mail , formites getting ripped off, knives being sent in terrible shape, deals being done then broken cause someone else offerd more...i have had my share of problems like everyone else, like new is like new not used and scratched, i only sell or trade with fomites i already know seems trust is a hard thing to give i am losing interest in knife collecting big time just thought i would share a few feelings lt me know what ya all think

I don´t know how it has been since I´m quite new. I do have to agree that there is sometimes a problem in defining what NIB, LNIB and MINT means. Some people seem to think that not abused fits any of these categories, which they of course don´t. A bit annoying to have to ask people what they mean by LNIB (especially if they know what they are selling).

I've bought 4 knives in the past 3 weeks. 3 of the knives have arrived so far and the 4th is soon to be enroute. Each of the individuals were upfront and honest. Heck, two of em shipped me my knives before my money order even arrived!

In addition, I needed the knives in a hurry. They went out of their way to make sure the knives arrived on time.

Overall, my experiences have been very positive. I guess it also helps if one does research on the seller before committing.

I have just recently begun purchasing knives from forumites, and so far I have been most impressed. :)
As Son Tao said, research is important. The GB&U forum is a great tool, and it is very important that we leave feedback after every transaction (the EBAY model).

I've had to refrain from buying anything in the last couple of months, so I've been staying away from the For Sale section completely (too much temptation). But I've done plenty of deals here, and I've never had a problem. Most of these folks are stand-up individuals.

There is always some question of terms because there is no set definition for many terms.

My "Excellent" may not be the same as anyone else's "Excellent."

The simple way to avoid this is to ask questions BEFORE you buy.

Emails cost nothing and if the questions go unanswered, then you obviously don't want to do the deal.

Ask for pictures, if those are not a possibility, (as like me, many people do not own a digital camera) then ask for DETAILED descriptions.

In either case, it should always be made clear that the deal is not "done" until the buyer has the knife in his hand and a chance to inspect it.

Let the buyer get it in his hands, look it over carefully, examine it to determine whether it is in the condition expected, and then say yes or no. (Within 24 hours of receipt should be an acceptable time limit.)

If the answer is no, the money doesn't get refunded until the knife is back in the hands of the seller.

As to dealing with forum members, checking GB&U is always a good idea, but take into account that there are people (like myself) who have been at BFC for a very long time and never bought or sold anything through the Sale/Trade forums.

However, like me, there are many people who have been here a long time, use their real names, post their real locations, etc. It would be foolish indeed for me or someone like me to do a bad deal. We can't "disappear" and re-surface a month later with a new username, so we're a pretty safe bet if we ever do decide to do a deal.

Overall, as a BFC member and user, I'm very proud of the GB&U forum. Take a look in there at all the "GOOD" posts as compared to the "Bad" and "Ugly" posts. It makes me feel like BFC has a pretty good bunch of people overall.

Don't let one or two bad experiences sour you.

Tim,

In case this could be any help, I have had my share of deals which didn't turn out like I planned, but I'm still happy with the trade we did. It's those good trades that keep me going.

And, off course, my own knifemaking.

Pictures of knives are also a nice plus, so you can see what your getting.

What I did notice it that since bladeforums for sale section became a paying members only section, that the trades section has suffered bigtime. People ask wanna trade this, only for that or that. Or plain cash. It's like people are only interested in cash anymore, not the knifecollector filosophy.

greetz & take care, bart.

As far as pictures go, I wouldn't put too much stock in them, as how can you be SURE that it is the un-doctored picture of THE knife that is being sent to you?, and maybe THE picture doesn't show "the bad side" of the knife...

Make SURE that you DO have recourse to "un-do" the trade/purchase prior to sending anything. If possible get a phone number, and TALK with that person.

Communicate with the buyer/seller/trader, EXACTLY what you expect.

Don't give-up hope, or beleive that we ALL are out to ripp-off everyone that we come into contact with.

I'll agree with Ken on this one.

It is very important to obtain feedback on a seller thru the GB&U forum before you buy.

I would also advocate sending E mail to a past customer, and ask him/her how things really went with the deal.

I know most of the people who sell here are honest & up front, but you will occasionally get a bad apple in the mix. Also, if you think you got ripped off by an individual, and communicating with the individual turns out to be fruitless, you can e mail one of the Exchange forum moderators, and one of us will be glad to assist if at all possible. I for one have no problem helping a fellow forumite if he/she has exausted all recourse on their own.

So far, the best, honest and fastest deals have been RIGHT here on BF. The only SCREW-UP has been when I had a Give away Benchmark blackie Collins and said it was a first production run in ATS-34 steel.
Hey TIM!!!!! remember!!!!. It was not ATS-34, but was still a NIB auto for free!!!!! I still trust the folks here......wolf:) :)

Guys, I just have to disagree. i have met the BEST people right here on BladeForums. I have made some pretty intense trades, to include firearms, and firearms related equipment. I have talked via E-mail with folks HERE that trade randalls, TNT's, YUP Sebbenza's with no more than a swap of addressess. It is that "cyber-handshake", that Given of "my word" that rings in HONEST, SINCERE,the odor of INTEGRITY, CREDIBILITY and you get what you think you are supposed to get and ship what you said you would. I know people get burned, but here? I look at the GBU and YUP, we ALL KNOW THE SNAKES!!!! (nothing intended Tim!!!!)EVERY trade I have entered in was NOT over until BOTH parties were HAPPY. PERIOD. I have yet to be burned. Oh God Bless mike White, AKA Blademan))&, AKA MWKATANA. he tried to scam me on a free knife give away on Knife Forums.com.( HE lacks the SWEET odor of DECENCY) BUT TIM, as you KNOW, even I screwed up here with that sidewinder that YOU won saying it was ATS-34!!!! I felt like a low-life and it was a pure freebie, no strings. I am hesitant to give out my phone number due to reasons cited, but maybe I am lucky, naive, or am a great judge of character, but trading or buying from a MEMBER OF BF with more than 20 posts has been WONDERFUL and I shall continue.......Good luck tim, but Judgement is a tuff call......wolf

Edited by wolf for spelling!!!!

I have had some awesome deals and met some truly outstanding people. Many of whom, have become good friends!
Sure, it can get weird sometimes . . . but, I do this mainly for the fine folks I have met and occaisionally get a good knife as a bonus!:D
For the vast majority of the meetings and transactions I have had here, I have found you guys to be honest, helpful, generous, and here recently downright patriotic! When I move out of the country, I can genuinely say I will miss getting to follow-up online meetings with the personal interaction at shows and such.
I have benefitted greatly!

I have bought many knives over the forums both from individuals and from makers and have had nothing but good experiences. The one glitch was with a certain person selling videos, but that was it and ultimately I did get my videos. All in all, I would say that the vast majority of forumites are very honest and upfront. As Ken said, anyone who posts under their real name and location would be very foolish indeed to rip anyone off.

I've bought/sold/traded several knives in these forums and it's been great fun. Fortunately I've yet to deal with a less-than-honest forumite. I only involve myself with sub-$200 production folders, so there's really not much incentive for a dishonest transaction. I know I've lost a lot more money than I've ever made dealing with knives, and I assume others share the same experience. It's just the nature of the hobby.

It has been Real...................................................................................................... ...................................................................
