Hey all. I hope your enjoying Father’s Day out there in this big beautiful world. In my small corner I had a neat knife story I thought I would share.
So more than a couple of years ago now I gifted my father in law a knife. A Gec 62 in st paddy’s day acrylic. He really liked it and carried it every day for years. Whenever I’d see him when he came by the house I would strop it or touch up the edges. He was to the point of walking in the door, shaking hands...and just handing it to me to look over for the edges or lint buildup or if a touch of oil was needed or what have you. I didn’t mind. It was cool to see him enjoy it and watch the patina grow.
Last couple of times he would complain it was getting harder to open. I don’t think the knife was getting stiffer...it was his arthritis kickin in at 75. I kept my eyes peeled and snagged him a no half stop knife with a similar frame (thx Buckeye Sharp Buckeye Sharp ...) and as luck had it it was a much softer pull. Today I laid it on him for Father’s Day...kinda casual like...and boy did he smile upon opening it. He confessed that last few month he had been using his old knife to cut in the half stop position as it was a bear to open all the way. Anyhow, he didn’t want the old 62 so I cleaned it up and maybe I will send it off the Gec to see if they can soften it up. It is kinda stiff for what it is...
And yeah I know this thread is worthless without pics so here are both knives...if anyone has any stories feel free to share them.5CEE0766-82DB-47F9-8A05-86ED2F29ACB9.jpeg2B451F84-E3D9-4045-9206-AE9A79DFCD96.jpeg

And more than the knives, he deeply appreciates how you care about him. Thanks.

Love hearing about people bonding with gifted knives... Happy Father's Day.
BTW... that St Paddy is a real special knife.

Thanks for sharing! What makes knives such great gifts is that you think of the person who gave it to you every time you use it:)
Thanks folks. Yes it was real neat to see him open it up. I laid out three for him to pick from. A 33, a mint 7 dot red bone 6318 with really civilized pulls, and that one he chose. He scoffed a bit at the 33 and said “that’s too small”, then picked up the 18 and said “this is nice” and was pretty pumped on the whittler. He grew up in a cabin with a dirt floor is Missouri and always has a knife on him. Actually two knives ever since I have known him. A little folder and a cheap wannabe thumb stud one hander with the crappiest steel. It wobbles because the pivot screw won’t tighten all the way anymore. We locktighed it a a fix...then jb weld. He is a contractor and uses it to check things for softness and rot. It has a pocket clip and he uses that as a money clip with his drivers license and a card or three. He loves it. I keep telling him I will get him something decent and he flat out refuses. He likes it that much. When he asks me to sharpen it I cringe as I grind my stones...;). I should snap a pic and post it in the cheap knives thread but it ain’t a traditional.

Super story! 😊👍

Good job.... great story to read. I enjoy giving knives to people that want/need them.
My daughter's husband had 3 kids when they married, and the youngest boy is almost 13. He's a pretty typical boy... spends a lot of time gaming... he also, through his paternal grandfather, has developed a liking for guns and knives. They were over at our house about a week ago, and he noticed an old red plastic, basic SAK laying on the counter in the kitchen. I somehow ended up with it in a trade, or some other transaction, but it had just been sitting on the counter for months.
He picked it up, looked it over and said "this is a cool Swiss Army knife!'... I said, "so you like that?... keep it, it's yours" His eyes lit up, and he acted like I had given him a $50 bill... just a little, simple gesture, but it was a knife he thought he wanted, and it made him happy.
