Pretty sure I just bought a fake PM2...

Before I take it up with the local seller, I would really, really appreciate if you could take a look and validate my suspicion that I just bought a fake PM2.

I should know better....but it was a local seller, seemed nice, and nothing screamed FAKE! When I got home I scoured the interwebs for clues (after I bought it, instead of being smart and scouring before... :( ) My reasoning:

  • The slope of the scale near the lock release isn't "curvy"
  • The blurry Spyderco logo
  • Clip screws wrong shape
  • No second cut-out on liner
  • Shape of lock release seems off

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

Yep.. It's a fake.

Not only the poor color, but the lock release curve, and the inner area by the actual lock. (It's square, not rounded)

No beveled edges on the real one.
Logo's aren't square with the blade, but the handle.

4th photo down, it sure looks fake to me. Both of mine are rounded on the scale behind the lock bar. It also doesn't have "extra" scale there, that half an octagon looking part of the inner scale. It folows the inner steel liner and doesn't end in something looks like a flag. Both of mine came from BladeHQ so I'm 99.99% positive mine are real. The 2nd pic has a weird milling all the way around the scale too, and looks too rounded. I'm no expert but it looks like a fugazi to me.

There's a reason I only buy new knives from forum sponsors. I distrust everyone and it takes a long time to gain my trust. While it makes it hard to make friends, it also makes it dang hard to get hustled. All forgers and sellers of forgeries should have a tattoo on their face. It makes it fair for the people that are new to the hobby. Only buy from forum sponsors is a "Mantra" that gets posted a lot here and this is the reason. Man I hate to see someone get taken.

It's like buying reloaded ammo from people at gun shows. Sure it might be safe, but eventually you will get a kaboomed handgun or rifle.

Yeah...I didn't realize it was so rampant until I started to dig in. I fired off an email to the (local) fellow I bought it from, politely asking to return the knife in exchange for my money. I'm guessing I won't be hearing back.... :\

For future reference here is the forum sponsors list-http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1089879-Paid-Dealer-Members-List, I bookmarked it myself when I first got into Spydies.

These shops are the best way to make sure you don't get taken again. I learned about them after my first Spydie (a Delica), which was real but at the time more than a few of these "is it fake" threads were going on. Ebay isn't a good idea either, it's rampant with fakes. Sorry about your luck, it takes a real dirtbag to sell someone a fake.

It's a fake . I initially thought it was real... But damn look at those screw clips. Dead give away. I remember years ago , a guy nearly tricked me into buying a " Delica" in " 440c" . Claimed that only 6 existed in the entire world. Wanted $500 for it. Imagine that

Sorry budy, it ain't real,

1. the jumping is off, it's sun rayed, real one faces your thumb when you push your thumb forward it grabs and secures it.
2. scale chamfer is wrong (too wide), real one is just rounded not chamfered.
3. Lock tab is too small (the part you push with your finger
4. The print should not be parallel to the plunge line

Not a bad copy but if you never own one, you will not know the subtle differences;... It looks really good wow...

Thanks for this. I looked, but couldn't find Canadian sponsors....any chance a special section for canucks who don't have to buy knives cross-border exists?

I can also attest to the above link. Great people and service at W&W. I've been buying from them for years.
