Preventing Brass from Tarnishing?

I have a FHM that I've had for about 6 months. In this time period I've had to polish the bolsters numerous times to keep them high gloss. Is there any thing I can put on them, short of clear nail polish, that will prevent them from tarnishing? It would have to be more like a metal treatment than an oil since oily handles on a heavy bali with an OAL of 11" is just a tad dangerous. Any ideas?

Clear coats will wear off of the handles with use. Try a jewelry cloth that you can pick up at your favorite department store. Much more convenient than rigorous polishing and not near as messy. Polish to achieve the desired finish then use the cloth to clean up periodically. Good Luck!

Tuff Cloth will help. But, the key to brass is that you do have to wipe the knife off every time you handle it. Fingerprints turn permanent on brass pretty fast.

While doing time for uncle sam's canoe club I learned on thing, brass is a b**ch to keep shinning it turns just from someone breathing on it. Even if you would put a clear coat on it, it would eventually turn green. Just keep the polish handy :)

The hardware Mfg,s solved this problem a few years ago by chrome plating then PVD coating with Titanium nitride or Zirconium Nitriding coatings on Door Knobs, and Faucets. This is the Forever Brass finish.

supposing that fingerprints are allowed to set for a while on brass, can they be polished out later?
peace.

Of course. But, they really get hardened in deep. The oils on your hand actually etch the surface of the brass. Polishing it out takes a lot of work.
