Preventing Rust?

Yesterday was my first day carring my GB at work. It was about 100 degrees and I had to chase someone on foot. Needles to say I was sweating like mad. My GB was clipped in my front pocket. About 5 hours into my 12 hour shift I noticed the beginings of rust stains on the side of the blade that was toward my leg. I used Militec-1 before going to work, but it did not seem to help. I sprayed the blade down with gun cleaning solvent when I got home, and the stains came off. I just don't want this baby to rust. I ordered a SOE sheath for my duty belt (and a Tuff cloth), so it should help when it gets here, but I will probably wear it in my pocket a lot off duty, and Its hot and humid in North Carolina most of the time. Any advise would be helpful.

Mick, is it possible to get my blade coated in black by your shop, or would I have to send it to you for disassembly, sent to another place for coating, then back to you for re-assembly? If you do it in house, about how much would it be? I really like the tiger stripes so I will try preventing rust first.

Thanks, Reagan

This subject keeps coming up. I use a drop of Break Free once a week, some of the guys have sent their blades to body cote. My GB has been light brown from time to time but it wipes right off with usage and oil. Where in NC are you?

I'm using Flitz rifle/gun wax on mine with quite some success. The stuff is non-abrasive and has stood up to EDC for on duty and off as well as when I'm in Texas during the 600yd shoots I attend (the heat there is pretty intense). It says it is good for 6 months in fresh water and 3 months in salt water but I usually reapply every couple of weeks or so. It also keeps dust and dirt from sticking to it since its a wax.
I found this stuff at one of the local police supply places in town so it should be at one of your local gun stores. I had tried the oil based lubes, the silicon based lubes and the Tuff cloth before this came along. Each had failed to stop the slight surface rust from developing after a hard days work or play. See if you can find it and give it a try. It cost me only about $8 and was for me a better alternative than sending it off to have a coating applied.

Good Luck

Seigfried, that stuff sounds just what I am looking for. I will look for it right away. Does it change the appearance of the knife much?

Brandon McKinley & HAMMERHEAD2, I guess I'm just a sweaty SOB:D
After running after the subject, I was not fit to be around anyone. I did'nt even want to be in the car with myself. It still was not as bad as last summer when I directed traffic in the middle of the day for a couple of hours.

The Flitz can go on as thin or as thick as you want it. I usually give mine a couple coats then rub out any of the excess that I don't want with a rag. When I'm done it leaves a dull matte appearance that allows the Tiger Stripes to show right thru. This stuff kind of reminds me of car polish.

Hope it works out for you,
Scott

Seigfried, Thanks for the idea. I called flitz and they gave me the full info. This stuff sounds perfect! I have a bottle plus samples of a bunch of their other stuff on the way for $13 including shipping. The customer rep. told me that if its on a knife that you use or carry every day, you should re-apply once a month just like you said. Thanks again, Reagan

Could I get that Flitz contact from you?

might as well get reasdy in advance!

thats interesting that the blade started to rust so soon. we all know that striders knives are made of a stain resistant steel. the order of the day should be little to no maintenance. i have notice that a matte or bead blasted stainless tends to rust quicker then a polished finish. i would carry the knife in a pouch on my gun belt. this would be more secure. offer more protection. and probably take care of the corrosion problem. my 2 cents.

Flitz phone # 1-800-558-8611
I called, and they were able to explain a lot over the phone. My GB was not in full rust, it was in the light blotchy stain phase. I have had bead blasted knives in the past, and knew it was the beginning. The stain came off with gun solvent. According to the Flitz rep, just apply a coat of the wax, let it dry, and buff with a cloth. Works just like a car wax, and is non-toxic. I was told that if it gets wet or sweat covered, just wip it off when you get home. I will post more after using it. Thanks for the great idea.

Hey Reagan,

What kind of gun solvent do you use? I need to get a small off of my AR.

thanx

I use Nitro gun solvent made by outers. I just sprayed the whole blade down, let it sit for a few, and brushed it with a plastic tooth brush. That stuff may not be the best stuff for the job though. Flitz makes a rust/stain remover that was recently recomended on this sight under another forum (first time I heard of the stuff). Good luck, Reagan

I've been continually lugging my AR since the day I received it. I have used several applications of a Tuff-Cloth, and I have not noticed any corrosion despite our hot muggy summer.

I did notice that on the clip side of the knife on the part of the blade that is exposed when folded that the blade now has a blue tinge. I assume that this is from my blue jeans and I have not as yet tried to clean it off. I'm not going to use anything aggressive, maybe some Nevr-Dull, most likely Tuff-Cloth.

Heck, it's a user.

I gave Flitz a call. They are going to give me some sample packs of some oxidation remover/polish/sealant.

They didn't know how it would react to the beadblast and tiger stripes.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I am looking for a wax that it easy to apply and take off with out leaving a lot of residue. Does Ren Wax or Flitz leave residue in the nooks? Do you have to use a brush to get it out?
