Stay out of the ocean!

My desert/mountain horse was a little unsure of that big blue sea..

He got over it:

Ty's horse Slick didn't mind getting his toes wet but was pretty sure the seaweed was gonna eat him.

Ty and Asia out pretty deep:

Nichole and Salty coming out. Salty's filly was a little unsure, it was only her 12th ride and 2nd outside an arena. Being next to Nichole's Lil Man gave her confidence.

Back at camp Ty, Nichole and Cara do some roping

Love the pictures and short story it tells. I'm sure fun was had by all, including the horses.

That cornbread and chilli made my mouth water.... man o man.

Leather looks good, too... but not as edible.

You could of at least had your shirt off to get a tan :)
Nice pics , and by the look of it , a great trip .

Yeah guys the trip was great and overdue. Weather was perfect: highes of 72 during the day and lows of 56 at night. The world is not ready for me without a shirt Ken, besides I have a tan it starts at the back of my wrists and extends on done my hands, rught where those long sleeve shirts end. Rick and I have discussed beer before so I should mention that we stopped at the Firestone Walker Brewery for lunch on the way home:

"Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!"

Wonder how many people know that one?

Do horses like water? I've never had a horse in the ocean. Of course, I live in Illinois, so it's kind of obvious, but the question still stands.

Morro Bay. I went to school near there. Lived one year in a cottage near the harbor. Thanks for the memories.

hare pepper?

wow dave, that chilli looks awesome, mind sharing the recipe or is it a secret?

curious, do you have to watch the horse as to take care that they don't drink the water? it was always a problem with our dogs, though they didn't necessarily drink, more likely swallowed it while swimming... one startet puking and got the shits from it.

thanks a lot for the pictures, really appreciate you sharing this.

Brian alot of individuality there, some do and some don't. My horse Sonny doesn't. Course it is very dry where we live so his opportunity to get wet is limited. Bout the time I get him use to walking through a puddle from a rain storm it drys up. He will jump a 6" rivulet and he is a big powerful horse, a guy should be prepared because when he goes, he REALLY goes and will clear that 6" stream by 10 feet. Didn't try to jump the Pacific though. Lil Man, Nichole's horse, isn't afraid of anything, thats how he got his name. He'd take up scuba diving if we'd let him and probably sky diving too. It was both their first trip over to the coast, about a 4 hour drive from where we are. I was really pleased with how well my horse did cause he really doesn't like water.

lawp, yep you nailed it. Cal Poly or Cuesta? I went to Hancock just down the road in Santa Maria and then to Fresno State. We were camped at Montano De Oro, a CA State Park just south of Los Osos which as you know is part of Moro Bay really. Its a cool park because its one of the few parks that is set up for camping with horses, having pens, water troughs etc. in the campsite and room for the rigs to park.

Thanks VP it really is good. Nichole makes it up and there really is no recipe, a little of this and little of that. Our friend Steve showed her how to make it some years ago. The big secret is using that dutch oven. You have to brown your meat and onions in that before you get going. My job was to watch it while I was baking the cornbread and make sure it kept simmering for a couple of hours and not let it get too hot. Those dutch ovens are great becuase you put coals under and on top and it cooks really even.

Never seen a horse try to drink the sea water. Lil man did try to take a bite of sea weed though, he's a chow hound. The big problem is standing in the waves and you and your horse can get vertigo. Secret is to keep moving, then it is not a problem. But you stand there too long and the horse can start swaying side to side and if you don't get them moving...splat over on their side they can go. Watched a buddy's hat head for Japan that way, just floated out to sea. He jumped out waded out got his hat and got back on his horse. He said no way that didn't just happen. Did it again the horse starts swaying and splat over on the other side this time. Now he's a believer.

Cal Poly, mechanical engineering. Great school and I loved my years on the central coast. Been through Tehachapi also, an oasis in the wilderness (forty years ago).

Grew up part of the time in Santa Maria myself. It was just a one stop light cowtown at the time. If we ever went to town, shopping or whatever it was to SLO. My daughter played basketball at a very high level and seemed like there for a couple years we were at Cuesta or Cal Poly for a tournament every other weekend. That was a couple of years ago. Central Coast is gorgeous thats why everybody lives there. Heck even Tehachapi has 3 or 4 stop lights now.

Dave
Looked like a great time! Chili and cornbread, staple food of the south also.
David

There were several couples on this trip. Each couple Nichole had assigned a meal. So we had the first dinner, cornbread and chili. Then breakfast next morning was more Southern staples biscuits and gravy done in some more Dutch ovens. Man was that good too.

Dave,

I visit this forum frequently but post here rarely. The good nature of discussion and the somewhat offbeat (but very interesting) posts by you are always refreshing and are one of the reasons why I keep visiting. Your photos consistently have interesting subjects and they allow me to "visit" a lifestyle that I've always admired.

Looks like a great time at the beach.

Thanks,

Mike L.
