With exception of the Devin Thomas, High Contrast Ladder Damascus blade, it's "just" a Commander.

As with the CQC7Bs and Mach1s that were at the Blade Show, the picture does not do the knife justice. To say the Damascus blade is Awesome is an understatement.

John, did you get this one from Jay and Karen ?
What type of maintenance goes into take in care of a Damascus?

Hey John,

I was never really a big fan of the Commander (I know, potty talk) but this one is abosolutely stunning. Great looking knife. Is it the picture, or are the scales actually smoother then regular Commanders?

Leo

I'm not sure as to what extra maintenance it will require above that of regular 154CM.

David

Don't let me hear you talk like that again!

I had to go check. I compared it to a couple of other new Commanders I have on hand and the scales are exactly the same pattern G10. It just looks tighter in the picture.

Awesome looking knife. How much more does the Damascus blade cost?

Also, not that you would ever ever use it as a hacker, but how do damascus blades perform functionally? Will it hold its edge? Is the Damascus as hard as the 154 (58 RC)?
Could it be resharpened with ease if necessary?

Why don't you take that great looking knife, go chop down some trees with it, and let me know?

Also, you say that this is a preview of the CP knives, is that for real? Is this elusive mythical thing actually becoming a reality?

Let me address what I can answer first. Is it for real? Yes. At the Blade Show in June, Ernie had four CQC7Bs and four Mach1s that were made with handground Damascus blades. One of those CQC7Bs is owned by one of our "Usual Suspects".

As with most of EKIs new models, a batch of handmades were made to "Announce" them at a major show.

At the Blade Show West, Ernie brought two Damascus Commanders for the same purpose.

The "C/P" line is coming. Soon.

In talking to Ernie, they were getting issues ironed out like having enough of the specialized materials on hand, enough personnel to handle the additional workload, ect.

To the rest, I have to admit, I don't know as of yet.

The care of the blade would depend on whether the blade was carbon steel damascus or stainless steel damascus. Carbon steel damascus must have a prservative or it will rust. I am not sure how rust resistant Stainless steel damascus is but I have had a Lightfoot 458 in stainless damascus for a month now and with no special care it shows no sign of rust. According to John Smith who forges both carbon steel and damascus, there really is no difference in the ability to achieve a sharp edge.

For those that are interested, I know there has been much discussion about the Damascus blades.

At the Blade Show, Ernie brought four CQC7Bs and four Mach1s with Damascus blades and production bodies. These knives were Specwar marked.

Since that time there were a small batch of knives that included the Commander pictured above that are EKI marked.

Per Mary, ALL of the Damascus bladed "C/P" knives that are out now are hand ground by Ernie. The reason they marked the newer ones with the EKI logo is that they have production bodies and despite the hand ground blades, are not considered "Customs".

Also, Photopoint is making some changes that are kind of neat. If you go to thier site you can see High Resolution pictures of photos that have been put in recently.

While the picture above is nice, the High Res version really shows the detail. If your interested in seeing it, click here then click on the picture. It may take a while to load, but it's worth it.
