I've been scouting around for steel to use in my first attempt at a Scottish dirk. I was thinking of 5060, but the price I see on this steel at Admiral is making me think maybe I should go for something like HR 1095 instead. Why such a big price difference between most of the carbon blade steels and 5060? And does anyone know of any less expensive sources for 5060?

You're right on that count a "Scottish" dirk should be made of the cheapest possible steel.

If you are talking about 5160, it's pobably the chrome, anything with chrome cost more. You might try a spring shop in your area. don't know what the cost of either steel is but the materials are usually not the most expense in a knife.
