Price of steel going up?

I get a chuckle out of consumer panic over FORECAST increases. Those same people don't think twice about a $3-4 Starbucks Latte. If all forecast predictions of commodities came true there would be a lot more millionaires.I would say that the best tactic to offset rising steel prices by 2012 would be to spend the next six years improving the quality of the knives we make by a factor of two or more. Then we could sell the knives for more than what we get now.I probably have enough steel in the shop to last beyond 2012 ,anyway (but I'll probably keep buying more).Besides, the steel is often the lowest cost item in a knife, usually $2 to $10 in steel makes a $200 knife. That works out to be 1% to 5% of the final price. If steel doubles it will only be 2% to 10% of the final price.

Reach out and grab the gold ring. The future is NOW! I can give you tomorrows prices today if you like. :D

...as Charlie Brown would say... "Good Grief!"

Rob!

I can remember when 1084 was cheap and plentiful, I didn't believe the rumor (at the time) that it was no longer being made. The USA is not the giant steel producer it once was, sad but true. I started stock piling good high carbon steel a few years ago and will continue. Steel may be the cheapest part of the knife but it's also the most important part.

Bruce, you're too much man! :D
