I know this is somewhat of a loaded question, but what kind of price premium does S30V have over 420HC in a Buck knife? I imagine it partly depends on the knife...

It also depends whether it’s a regular production model, or a custom shop, or SFO through a dealer. I’ve seen some SFOs that were only $14-20 difference from a regular model sporting 420hc even in the ultra premium steels have been a surprise. I don’t know how the price is figured at dealer level but the custom shop has a $13-15 upgrade for s30v but custom is higher for 420hc so you are much higher than regular both ways. I like to shop the dealers and support them and still supporting Buck factory but the dealers usually have some good prices on s30v especially during sales events. The bottom line is Buck knives has the best price point for upgrade steels and quality of any manufactures I’ve seen including imported.

This thread also makes me think about the price for carbon steel blades such as 1095, 5160 and others. Buck hasn’t been crazy with pricing on standard carbon steel and they have been reasonable but other companies I’ve seen charging more for carbon steel than Buck charges for s30v !
I just don’t understand how a standard regular type steel can fetch a premium price. I guess it’s because of popularity and the demand is currently strong for those particular knives even though they quit producing stainless models which fetch an even higher price.

Business needs to make a profit on their product, some companies make a much smaller profit than others,Buck has always had a reasonable price on their products, years ago I remember the prices in the custom shop were so low that it made me wonder how they made any money on the custom side of it,Soon they raised the prices on everything in the custom shop, lots complained but I'm sure they decided on making a profit or shutting it down altogether.

I'm glad Buck sells their premium knives for a reasonable price compared to some manufactures .
