Prices at knife shows

I recently started becoming interested in Hinderer knives, and from what I've found out if you are a cop, firefighter, emt, etc... you can get Hinderer knives for the $400-500 range. Otherwise on the secondary market your are going to pay $750-1000 for the same $400 dollar knife.

Does he drop his prices at knife shows? Can you pick up an XM for $400-500 if you go to an event he is at, or are his prices still high for us folks that are not cops?

I really want one of these knives, and I can pull together four hundred for a folder, but eight hundred is out of my league.

Can you buy one directly from him, if so how long is the wait/price? It seems that all the dealers that he lists on his website are
all sold out of his stuff? How often do they "re-up"?

Any info would help,
thanks

The stickies are full of answers to these questions.

Yes, at shows the knives are priced at MSRP. Customs start a couple hundred dollars higher (+/- on average) and go higher for carbon fiber or Ti scales or if the knife is a "first-ever" or "one-of-a-kind).

"Civilians" cannot order directly. But do have the same chance as anyone who travels to a show and enters a lottery to buy.

So if you are the first at his booth, you can't just buy one? ...you have to enter a lottery?

That's exactly right, and also take CASH, because if you win the lottery and get the chance to buy one, they don't take credit cards, so you have to carry the cash on you. Ask me how I found that one out :D :o.

If it was a "firsties" situation, it would lose all the fairness the lottery system tries to create.

It works like so---you enter the show, go to the booth, get a ticket.
Fill out the ticket and turn it in for a chance to win the opportunity to buy a knife.
If you are fortunate enough to win, you choose one knife from those available at the time your name is called.

lol That would suck.

On average, how many knives does he auction off at an event?

I didn't actually win - but I was standing around with my ticket in hand waiting to be called when I found out that without cash you were out of luck.

You can't get $800 out of an ATM (at least mine won't) so I was tragically un-prepared.

There is always next time!

And it's not auction...it's lottery. It's not a bidding system.

Thank goodness too, the auction prices would likely eliminate many buyers. So many don't realize how good they have it at Hinderer Lotteries to be able to potentially purchase an XM at the same price since Rick started selling XMs. Imagine if Rick ran each knife as an auction...

Based on the OP's initial question and some of the parameters contained within, the long and short of it is....
Make it to a show - which I would whole heartedly recommend for lots of reasons.
Keep an eye out for Lottery opportunities that pop up here.
They are Great Knives made by Great guys and well worth owning. Perhaps as time marches on you will see other
ways of seeing clear to finance a purchase, many of us have and I believe - with no regrets to a Man.
Good Luck:thumbup:

Thanks, do you know how often and when do the Hinderer dealers re-up on XM's?

It doesn't really work like mass produced brands and retailers. In general, keep a close eye on everywhere they are sold around the time of new production runs and show dates.

Look at every dealer that he lists, Last week I seen a few XMs sitting around but you are going to pay the second hand market rates from a dealer. They do NOT sell at the price Rick sells them for to LE, Military and First Responders.

Most often very true.

Here's the deal; if you own one, you don't want to let it go for less than you paid. And if you bought at or near MSRP, you are less likely to sell at MSRP because you know these knives sell for a premium in the open market. It's simply supply and demand economic thinking.

I've said it before, you got to pay to play.

Good luck to everyone in their hunt. The journey is part of the experience and also why the knives trade hands as they do.

Off the top of my head:

  • Tactical Knife Invitational
  • East Coast Custom Knife Show
  • Blade
  • USN Gathering Knife Show (Las Vegas)
  • California Custom Knife Show
  • New York Custom Knife Show

I could be missing something. Also, they have their knife classes/open houses as well.
