Pride of ownership- less is more?

Hello guys:)

I see myself troubled with a decision that i would like to hear your opinion on.
After collecting knives since like forever i'm at a stage where i found that Hinderer and CRks are really the thing that really works for me.
My small Insingo and my 3" XM-18 are my main EDCs for quite a while now.

I also carry my small 21 but it really has been loosing pocket time since the arrival of the Insingo.
Anyway, i also own a large Regular and have my eye on another large CRk:D
To be able to have these knives, my collection shrunk a lot because i sold/traded most of the ones i had.
It was a decision i'm comfortable with after owning most of what's out there regarding production knives.
It's not that the other knives were bad but CRks and Hinderer, besides being great performers like many others from other brands, also always gave me a bigger pride of ownership.
So to get to where i'm at right now i went through a phase of having lots to just a few resigned to the idea that less is more.

I have my 3"XM for half a year or so and it has been on me constantly for the past weeks.
It is everything i could wish for on a knife! Perfect in every way!
Extremely comfortable to hold, very easy to disengage the lockbar, the smoothest action, in fact, mine is so smooth that i can deploy it with the flipper using only my finger in every hand position, tip up tip down, cuts like hell...a dream!
I absolutely love this knife:)

This is my only Hinderer and would really like to get the 3,5" to own the pair.
However to be able to buy one i would have to be extremely lucky for it to pop up over here. If in the US is hard to get one go figure around here!
But i've been lucky before so who knows right?:D
Also, besides the luck factor, i would have to sell one or two CRks to fund it:eek:
You see, i can't spend that much money on a knife at this stage of my life so i would have to sell but wich ones?
I only EDC my 3" knives so the larger ones are more for collection or to use around the house pretty much.
So in my eyes one of the larger ones would have to go.
BUT here is where the pride of ownership comes in to play and makes me question this whole thing!:)

What do you guys think i should do?
Has any of you been through this?
Do you think that less is more after a while?

Thanks for looking:)

I think its a good thing to do I had 6-7 solid knives, benchmades, spydercos then bought small sebenza and wow what a difference in every aspect. Also I cant justify collecting knives and not using them so I will probably get one more CRK sebenza 25 hope so and also ordered Demko AD-10 so with 3 good knives thats all I need.Quality in motion. And yes I agree less is more and better than having lots of .I was thinking about xm-18 but will get demko first and if i dont like it trade it for hinderer.I have to handle it before I start liking them.:)

I love that Yellow-Boy you keep flashing. I just wish you'd sell it to me for a song and then you'd be a good guy and I'd be happy.
I think your idea is fine: dump the ones you don't use...unless you have some collector genes in your body, in which case you might wish to keep a few of the really nice ones.
My problem is similar. I started out with just two EDC knives over the last ten yrs or so, and then caught the bug. I started getting Spydercos in the $200-range and then trading off, trying to keep the better ones, learning as I went along.
I went through a whole bunch of knives, just knowing that I'd never have the money or need to buy something outrageously expensive like a Chris Reeve model.
And now, I have an Umnumzaan, a large Sebenza and a new small (fancy) Sebbie with lignum vitae inlay. Of course, I'm determined to NEVER spring for a XM-18 3" like you have.
But, it shore is purty. :)
Sonny

What that all means is that I agree with your Master Plan.

I'm with you - less is more! I've been selling off quite a few knives that I either don't carry, don't use, or aren't pretty enough to keep :D I've really narrowed down my tastes lately and realize I don't need dozens and dozens of knives to keep me happy. Quality over quantity. :)

I've been doing the exact same thing!

I just purchased my first Hinderer, the XM18 3.5 spanto duratech 20CV. It sure be here early next week so im ecstatic about it. I had to sell of a few knives in order to purchase it, but I think its going to be worth it. I did the same thing when I bought my Les George VECP and I couldn't be happier.

I realized that I end up spending 800 to 900 dollars on knives within two months anyways, so instead of spreading out that cash on cheaper production blades over that frame of time, I've been saving most of it for customs/ semi customs.

I am definitely one of those "less is more" type of knife guy. Ideally.... I would love to just have that ONE knife and that's it, but that's just impossible for me. However I'm keeping my collection in the single digit. I'm still in the process of thinning it down to only 6, and each of those will be knives that are hard to find even if you have the money for it. The fact that I was able to purchase them a lot had to do with luck (or fate) because I just happened to be looking at the right place at the right time. For me personally that's what defines pride of ownership.

I too believe in "less is more".
I'd rather have several really nice folders than many inexpensive knives that never get pocket time.
I do have a couple of inexpensive knives that are my "hard duty" knives...kinda silly perhaps but there it is.

I think thats just the progression of things, doubt I'll ever get a hinderer though, found one xm-18 3" in stock online last night but I just cant do the $975 for it. Perhaps I'm just not to that level yet, only now just ordered my first CRK.

Thanks for the comments so far guys:)
Sonny, i'm not sure if i will ever sell this one but if i do i will send you some pics of it teasing you:D

My question however hasn't been answered!
Would you sell a CRk or two for one Hinderer?
Kind of a subjective question:D but what would you do if you had the chance?

The answer is YES...if I could get a Yellow Boy 3". I would likely sell one CRK and one or several NIB Spyderco Sprint or dealer-exclusive PM2's or Military models. But I would want to "handle" one first before that type of transaction. I've never held a XM-18 3". I do have a ZT 0550, which I think is a rather larger knife...more in line with the 3.5" model Hinderer...and I like the 0550 but it's too large, IMO, for casual EDC. I have been carrying either my Unmumzaan or large Sebbie for a while now, and even though their blade-length is about 3.6", the knives are slim enough and light enough to make daily carry feasible.
I have first responders in my family; wish they'd consider a nice little Xmas present for me. I'll likely get a HallMark card instead. :)

I used to have more knives, guns, tools, and other stuff than I could keep track of. Then I had the gieant downsizing. Now I only keep a few guns on hand, and keep my knives down to a very small collection in a single cigar box. The result is that each one of my knives is more valuable to me, and having less means I use it more. With less knives in rotation, each knife gets more carry and use, thus has more importance to me. I'd love to be a one knife man, as well as a one gun man, but I know it ain't gonna happen, as I love them too much. But I can keep them down to a small number.

My policy now is, one in=one out.

Carl.

probably not honestly, is it really that much better than a CRK? this thread is in danger of derailing with that question.

I never handled a hinderer but I woud not sell or trade two CRK for one xm-18 its too much

Hi you all,

this is my first post in this forum I think. Finally something I can talk about ;).

When I got my first XM-18 3,5" I sold my Umnumzaan to help with the funding and have never missed it (yet).

The Sebbies on the other hand... that's a tough call and I wouldn't do it.

I have my eye on an Umnum actually:)
Should I save the money in the eventuality of a 3,5" appears?
The problem with that is that I don't know if it will ever pop up at a reasonable price
They are so rare over here that I don't know if it deserves the wait.
That is the real problem:(

The Umnum is a nice knife no doubt about that but somehow we never warmed up to each other ;).

I would save the money cause if you don't like the XM you can get two Umnums for it if you wanted to. ;)

Where in Europe do you live? Just yesterday I got an offer for a 3,5" Spanto non Flipper and a Umnum from Germany.

If I planned on carrying the 3.5" XM-18, I would consider moving a couple other knives to cover the cost, but I don't personally feel an XM-18(at current secondary market prices) is worth two CRKs, based on my experience with both knives. I wouldn't consider doing it for a safe-queen, though.

I really like that yellow-handled knife, but I might not be happy with the 3" blade. I carry my Umnum or lge Sebenza now, and my small Sebenza sits in a box, at least for now. I also have a ZT 0550 and find that it's just a bit too heavy, large, bulky for me to EDC in comfort.
You just can't please some folks.
Sonny

How well does a small sebbie fits your hand Sonny?
For me 3" folders are more than enough so it is perfect for my needs.
Ok so i won't tease you if i ever change my mind:D
