This one was forged for the Blade Show, but came back to Texas with me. It ended up going to a customer who has bad luck with poisonous snakes, and when he saw pictures said it would be perfect for the inevitable ophidian encounters whenever he is outdoors.

It's forged from 5160, with a blade 12" long. The handle is two layers of paracord over leather, all impregnated with marine epoxy.

The Kydex sheath has slots for straps, allowing a quasi-traditional horizontal carry on a belt.

I also shot a little cutting video before it left the shop.

Thanks for video. Great blade. I watched the video and I also wanted to try it in practice.

You know I think that is a nice piece, but he is better off with a .38 special loaded with snakeshot than he is with a knife....but that is just practicality talking.....antivenin shots and necrotic skin/muscle is soooo much more romantic.

Living in SoCal, I have a healthy respect for rattlesnakes....even though antivenin is effective at keeping you from dying, getting nailed by a big one is a major life event....one that I don't want to experience.

Enjoyed the video. They are getting better IMHO.
Ordered my snake boots last week !

Badass blade! If I was going up against some poisonous snakes I'd want that thing on the end of a 10-foot pole, plus maybe a few 1/4 sticks of dynamite. :D

Thank y'all!

STephen - This is the tanto I asked your impression of at Blade. JParanee had the same comments. :) Thank y'all for y'all's insight.

My melee weapon of choice for snakes would be either a field hoe, a long-handled shovel, or a billhook (brush ax, ditch bank blade, whatever your particular term is). This guy definitely would have a firearm about him, but he has fun things happen like be fishing in the middle of a river and look down to find a fat cottonmouth sunning itself across his bare feet. He stood very still for a long time until the call of nature became irresistible. As soon as the waters flowed, the snake slithered off into the river as fast as it could. :)

wdtorque - I don't edit out as much of the silliness these days.

If there's a snake on the ground I wouldn't hit it with a blade.
All those little rocks and stones could mess up the edge 😲

Awesome rig!
I'm with you, James...we call em a kaiser blade.

Snakes around here have nightmares about old ladies with garden hoes.

Lol....yall just don't understand my luck with nasty snakes!! I'm usually always on rock and they are so close that shooting them is out cuz yes I'm armed 24/7. I know the can strike far and fast yeah I may hit rock a bit but nothing I can't fix. It works better than my old Hawks. It's light, fast, and a beast can't ask a better blade I've sold 90% of my old knives atleast to buy from James and have yet not to love what he has sent me. Will there be more Helm Forge and Helm Grind in my future? 100% definitely! Wish I'd had a few of his knives and Hawks when I was overseas and bouncing around the globe!

Maybe get a pair of snake boots for Christmas?

I'm usually fishing or hiking a good distance and water is always involved and I swear they wait till I'm barefoot. I run into bear, coyotes no issues except for one lone coyote and I just shot him. But never ever fails at the worst possible time ta da there is a copperhead, cottonmouth, ect and it's always a situation where I can't shoot. I love my trips to Jamaica 1 non poisonous snake on the island and its endangered...yay!

So, the coyote attacked you?
Snakes do not ATTACK people. Just leave them be.
Sorry for the hijak.

The coyotes here will take your dog right off the leash and eat it not too far from you.

Snakes will nail you if you are not careful, Rolf.....and I'm not talking stepping on them either....if you are hiking or riding a bike and get too close they will pop you, and I'm talking about Western Diamondbacks(some of which are frikkin huge), from experience....sometimes you luck out and it is a dry strike, but if in has venom, be prepared for some serious, serious hurt.

I have black widows at my house, see them all the time...but you leave them be, they leave you be.....rattlers can just be ornery.
