Hi, guys!

Hey, those of you who own and use Paul's Hatchets; how do you mainly use it? I've got one from one of the folks who went to Blade this year; but I've not had the chance to really put it through its paces.

I've done some ulu-type cutting; not bad at that...maybe a bit awkward with the handle sticking out, but definitely manageable. I haven't had a chance to really chop, yet; but I've gotten a good feel for it. It's weight seems enough that it would be a very capable chopper on small jobs; but I'd imagine it'd tire a person out after a bit of time, especially on larger jobs, because of its small size. I'd also like to see how it does finer wood/bush work...that's the main reason I bought it, for a nice little bush ax that could also do knife stuff if needed. And I've never skinned anything; so I couldn't even guess how it'd perform on game.

So what is its role for you? When you carry, do you carry it solo; or would you always pair it with a blade? Do you do a lot of actual chopping with it? What do you all think of it?

Also, anyone have both the Paul's Hatchet and the Swamp Rat Ratchet? What do you think of the two, and how they compare? Not just the steel, but the feel in the hand as well.

Thanks, guys!

I have a close cousin, the Ratchet. And yea, it seems to be a rather mission specific tool. Kind of like half a knife, which opens up a whole world of possibilities in the field. Game processing being one of the places it shines.

I love my little half knife. :D

i take mine every where i can. i have used it to do everything, from split kindling, food prep, to mechanic work.

a friend of mine got a doe last monday, and i capped part of it with the paul's. it's awesome at chopping rib's, veggie's, cracking nut's.

most of what i do with mine is on the job stuff. i have a problem with old building's, clean up site's, junk yard's. i just can't seem to stay away from them, no matter how hard i try. for example i was pounding in a few nail's for a temp header board on a lean-to we were working under. not to long after that i opened a few can's with it, to see what was in them. later that day i had to chop a hole in some plyboard. worked like a charm on everything i asked of it.

long period's of chopping can get painful. i usually keep a braided lanyard on my wood's paul. gripping it lower with two to three finger's on the handle and the lanyard wrapped around your last two. you get a lot more chopping swing and power, plus the shock isn't as bad.

the best thing about the paul's is the package. if i walked around with a fbm or b-11 strapped to my side i might get stopped a lot more. with the compact size i still get a lot of blade, in a small size that all but goes un-noticed around here.

will it out chop a fbm, no. will i take a paul's over a fbm, anyday of the week. don't get me wrong, i own and use both. the paul just suit's me better for my "edc". also if you want to get some swing with it, just lash it to a nice hickory or locust pole. the tube's make this very quick and easy to do. you would be surprised how much it bite's! i hope this help's and enjoy the hell outta it.

like i said you can do almost anything with it. maby i'll flip some hot cake's for ya in the morn with it. i do have to add that you Can Not make a pbj with it. the mess is not worth the effort! yeah you can pour the Jelly, but waiting on chunky legiums will make ya "open" the jar. someone will be along shortly with a few other user pic's.
