From eBay I purchased a John Primble Old Timer pocketknife. I thought I'd share a little about this knife with you guys, since they seem to be rare. Then hopefully one of you guys can fill in some details.

First off, the knife is same pattern as the 8OT, has brass liners and pins, brown sawcut delrin handles, Old Timer shield, and nickel-silver bolsters. The tang is stamped, "JOHN PRIMBLE / BELKNAP, INC / USA" and "935" on the reverse side.

Interesting differences between this knife and the Schrade 8OT:
- It has a fancy nail nick, but not like the Keen Cutter 8OT either; the 'teeth' are quite small.
- the grind on the back of the main blade is rather large and stops abruptly midway across the nail nick. The late-model 8OTs have no top grind at all, and the older 8OTs have a smaller top grind that extend the full length.
If that doesn't make sense, I can scan the knife.

It appears obvious to me that this knife was made by Schrade and sold by John Primble. Anyone have a guess as to the date? Anyone comment on the rarity?

How about the packaging? The knife was inserted inside a clear plastic tube, unmarked, that is supposed to be the original packaging. There was a past discussion on whether or not Schrade ever sold knives in clear tubes. So was the clear tube supplied by Schrade or Primble, or neither? There is brown staining on the inside of the tube that align with the knife handle edges, so apparantly this knife has been stored inside this tube for a very long time.

Any comments or questions?

Best Wishes,
Bob

Belknap Inc. was Belknap Hardware of Louisville, Kentucky. They had contract knives made for them by Boker, Camillus, and Schrade...at least. John Primble was probably their most popular marking. The stamp you mentioned seems to date the knife between 1968 and when they went out of business in 1986.
I'm pretty sure Blue Grass Cutlery acquired the mark about that time, and still markets some Primbles made for them on contract.

Hope others can fill in some more for you, Bob.

I once thought about buying John Primble knives and did a little reading about them. In the end, I didn't buy any because as Bill said, they were made by many different companies.

The name is currently owned by Blue Grass, and unfortunately, many of the John Primble knives being marketed today are made in China. This one is Chinese and is a close copy of a Queen and Canal Street fixed blade. It sells for a little over $30.00. Notice the USA marking on the sheath.

As for the old knives, here's a site with some good info:

Elsewhere on the same site, they have a pretty good selection of the older knives, some of which may have been made by Schrade:

Thanks for the link - a lot of info there. And thanks for the heads-up about the 'new' Chinese John Primble knives. I wasn't planning on buying one, but it's good to know anyway.

My primary interest in John Primble is their Old Timer knives, made by Schrade. Anyone know how many different Old Timer patterns were marked Primble? I just found another on eBay, so I know there are at least two...

Afterwhile I'll scan the main blade on the 935. I've never seen a nail nick like it.

Best Wishes,
Bob
