Hi,
I'm making a knife from an old circular saw blade right now, and I'm afraid I've burnt the temper. What do I need to do to get it back, and how?
All I've got is the ability to make a fire, and Possibly a BBQ pit. don't think the BBQ pit would get hot enough though.
I don't know what steel this is.
I suppose I should forget about it and call it a prototype. :(
Thanks guys!

P.S. I found a tutorial for a HT stove. Anybody else here that has made their own? have a few questions...

Brian, if you have a way to heat the blade red hot, heat it uniformly until a magnet doesn't grab the steel, heat a little more, then quench it immediately tip down into transmission oil. Temper at around 400 degrees for at least an hour in your kitchen oven. test with a file.

There are lots more ways to do this, but this is about the simplest way to learn.

The steel may be L-6 or it could be a low carbon core on a blade with carbide teeth, too. That is the problem with "mystery" steel. To heat it the simplest way,use a propane Turbo torch. It will heat a blade to non-magnetic just fine.Follow Don's advice for quench and temper. If a file skates along the edge and won't bite after the quench,it is HC.If it won't harden,if is not usable for a knife.
