I'm looking for a group that teaches primitive skills (flint knapping, etc) and survival skills in NJ. I know about Tom Brown's school, but I'd like something less crowded really. I remember reading of a group in central jersey, but I've lost the link and their name escapes me.

i believe theres a couple of affiliated classes, guys that were students of brown who went of to open another school. i would still try to take browns class, most people arent lucky enough to live in NJ and have the money to take a class. myself, i cant wait to turn 18. im already been saving money to go there. maybe ill intern there after my freshman year at ohio state agricultural techinical institute. i hope to take the tracking, and the scout courses. good luck with the class!

p.s. if you do decide to go to the tracker school, bring nice high top, and waterproof moccasins instead of boots or sneakers, my cousin went to the standard course and regreted every step he took in the boots he brought.

wow that gather sounds like a complete rip off of tom brown. they even have an native called "grandfather"! jeez, ya think tom will sue? i doubt it though, i dont think hes like that.

Thanks, the Gatherers were who I was thinking of.
I have nothing against Tom Brown, but I think the massive popularity of his classes due to 'The Hunted' and his books may make his classes too crowded and expensive for me.

Are you sure they took the idea from him, or he and they took it from an older tradition? Tunkasila ...

Checked out the site.....look's great.

I sent them an email but everything looks out of date. The story of the "modern walkabout" in southern NJ (the Pine Barrens) was very interesting. For a small, and quite congested state, we still have quite a few wild places.

There's a group called Pineland Trackers, check out http://www.pinelandtrackers.com/

Also there's a class being planned for April 30, focusing on the Apache limp wire trap, and variation on that trap. It will be in the Pine Barrens and will be $75 from 8:30 to 6, I believe. You can e-mail ksreeve@comcast.net for info on that, also Kevin is the former director of Tracker School and he runs a school called On Point Tactical which is also in NJ and also awesome. Check out www.onpointtactical.com
