Are carry on rules the same on private planes as they are on commecial flights? I thought they might be a bit less regulated, but it's good to know before I show at the air port with a pocket full of knives. Any thoughts?

I would think that it wouldn't matter.

Reason being that even if you put your knives into your baggage and you're getting on a private plane once you get to the plane you can put your knives back in your pocket. They probably just don't want it on your person in the airport.

If it's a company jet or a small propeller airplane I don't see why it would matter if you know everyone.

the faa has guidelines that pertain to all aircraft.

but flying on a private plane the restrictions would be largely up to the owner or pilot, i imagine.

most often when flying privately one would board in a hanger or on a tarmac and bypass the terminal. you wouldnt even see any tsa personnel except at the drive in gate, where i dont believe they check luggage. im sure you show id or credentials, but beyond that i dont think much goes on.

for example, if a terrorist were to attempt to fly a private plane and crash it intentionally in a terrorist act, he may be intercepted by a military jet, but the loading of explosives into the plane may be unmonitored.

generally private entities make many of their own rules. they be more restrictive, or less, but must be within the allowances of the existing laws.

i could be wrong of course, but from what ive seen at smaller airports, the charter or owner would be responsible for whatever is transported.

Hey man, you own or lease the plane, you can bring on pretty much what you want.

Not to bring up a dead thread, but with the cost of quality knives today, you need to know this. Yes, they do check private aircraft. They have metal detectors in the majority of big city "General Aviation" airports. Washington, Baltimore, NYC, Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, Miami, St. Louis, KC, Dallas are a few just to start. A GA airport section in a larger complex such as described above have TSA officials at each gate. You will go thru a magnetometer, and your baggage, both checked and carry-on, will be swabbed for explosives residue. Your carry-on may or may not go thru x-ray, depending upon the proximity of potential terrorists' targets nearby.

Now, an airstrip and gate facility in Nowhere, North Dakota, if unmanned or staffed only by servicing employees (fill 'er up please) and an airport "manager" during normal business hours (6 AM to 6 PM), no, you shouldn't have any problems. You can easily identify these airports by not having tarmac and take off control radar, and no real tower.

Just a heads up....
