Private messages?

Why TF are what used to be called Private Messages showing up in searches now? I search for a knife I’m looking for and every single message I’ve sent to somebody about it is showing up in the search.

So, PMs are now DMs and are no longer private? Everybody can just see in plain view what everybody is talking about via these DMs?…. I gotta real problem with that and have a damn good hunch I’m not alone.

As far as I know, the only thing that changed was the name.

Used to be "Private Messages" under the old BB software whose name I don't remember at the moment.
Became "Conversations" under Xenforo.
Now Xenforo changed the name to "Direct Messages."

edited to add: if there is a way to see someone else's PM's I don't know how to do it.

Send me a message and tell me what to search and I'll reply back to you, (privately, I hope), what comes up.

(FWIW, I don't see your PMs / DMs when I search your posts or content)
 
Up to an hour or so ago I was seeing messages from everyone to everyone else when I did a search. I just tried it again and I’m only seeing my own. No idea what happened. I was seeing messages pop up from random members I don’t know to other members I don’t know. I’m hoping this means what we used to consider private messages are actually private.

I saw stuff going back and forth asking for PayPal addresses, tracking info, etc.
 
No need to worry. It is only conversations you are involved in that you can search. This is actually a fantastic feature that will make life easier for many people.

Wow that would be quite disconcerting then. However, any time I have used the feature I can only bring up conversations that I have been a part of.

Yeah. That was my first thought. “PII on display, great….” I’m hoping it was maybe profile posts or something I was seeing, but I don’t think so. I hadn’t had that many brews at that point. In fact I hadn’t had any yet.

Anyway, now all I can see is my own. I’m just hoping they truly are private now.

The search option has "profile posts" and "direct messages" right next to each other. It would be easy to have misclicked. I know. Misclicks have cost me many chess games.....

Oh not at all. More of my chess games have been lost by blunders, and general chess ineptitude. I own it. ;)

I'll admit to never having had the patience (nor probably the aptitude) to stick with it.
 
It does take a bit of that.

Interesting. I don't get any results from searching my messages. I tried purposely putting in a keyword that I know is in the title of one, and still nothing.

Not complaining, mind you. I'd rather get no results than have P.I.I. exposed.
 
Messages from the time of, and after the migration are searchable.
 
In all my testing, I have only ever made results come up for conversations that I am personally involved in. Given that I have searched the word "knife" as part of that test, I think we can all breathe easy.
