Pro Grip versus Wegner Jr.

I'm looking for an under 3" knive and have narrowed it down to two choices. A stainless Spydie Pro Grip with VG-10 or Spydie Wegner Jr. with ATS-34. I've handled the Pro Grip and it seems to be rock solid with a decent size grippable handle for it's blade length. It also has nice fit & finish.

I've read great things about the Wegner, but haven't had a chance to hold one (hard to find locally). They both have similar 1/8" thick blade styles at 2 7/8" long. The Pro Grip has a nice thin profile also. I'm aware of the different locking mechanisims.

I'd like your opinons on durability, blade play, ergonomics, how comfortable to pocket carry, etc. Also, does the Wegner Jr. have a stainless back strap like the full size version? What's you opinion of only one liner one the Wegner Jr.? What is the liner/lock steel made from on the Wegner?

I've owned a one liner Starmate and was NOT impressed. I currently own a Chinook that's built like a tank...A VERY HEAVY TANK!

Thanks fellow Knife Nuts for your help!

hardys,

I can speak in an informed way only about the Wegner Jr., although I have briefly handled the Pro Grip as well; it's a nice design.

The Wegner Jr. is an exact scaled-down version of the large Wegner; I believe. It most certainly feels and looks like it is. I owned a plain edge version which I traded, then kicked myself repeatedly until I obtained a partly serrated one which I currently own.

They are stunning. The fit and finish is incredible. It has the same stainless steel back strap as the large model. I don't know what steel type the liner and lock are made of but they are perfect in every way. These knives are of a very strong and durable design, just like their larger counterparts. The action is silky smooth, and absolutely tight. They can be thumb flicked open with very, very little effort due to the light drag of the liner lock and the relatively heavy-for-it's-size blade, then closed one-handed with ease. The ATS-34 blade steel is superb.

That's what I think of them.

Cheers, Jeff/1911.
