I'm always wondering how to correctly pronounce some of the knife-related terms I see on the forums. Here's a starter list of my questions. Feel free to chime in with your own questions (or answers!).

Busse: Bus-E?
Camillus: Cah-mi-lus? (emphasis on second syllable)
Victorinox: Vick-tor-i-nocks? (emphasis on second syllable)
Fairbairn: Fare-baren? (emphasis on first syllable)
Muela: Mew-lah? (emphasis on first syllable)
Kydex: Kye-dex? (emphasis on first syllable)
Bowie: Boe-wee? (emphasis on first syllable)
Mokume: I have no idea on this one, folks!
0170-6c: How do you say this? Something like 5160 is easy, "fifty-one-sixty", but steels like 0170-6c or Z60CDV14 I just don't get. They don't exactly roll off the tongue. :rolleyes:

And is it just me, or does the phrase "A2 tool steel" make you sound like you're stuttering?

This should be educational.

I have always pronounced Busse as Boo-zee. Emphasis on the first sylable
Bowie = Boo-wee. Emphasis on the first sylable
Mokume = Moe-koo-may. Emphasis on the first sylable (though I have heard it with the emphasis put on the second sylable). Moe is pronounced like Moe of the Three Stooges.

I think you have Camillus, Victorinox, Fairbairn and Kydex correct and am not sure of the pronuciation of Muela except that I personally pronounce it Moo-el-a. Emphasis on the second sylable.

I just call it A2, not A2 tool steel.

One that I would like to know the proper pronunciation for is; Choil. Chole is how I pronouce it and how I have heard it pronounced, but I would like to know if this is correct or not.

This is how I say them...

Busse: Bus-E? byuce (rhymes with juice)
Camillus: Cah-mi-lus? (emphasis on second syllable) same
Victorinox: Vick-tor-i-nocks? (emphasis on second syllable) same
Fairbairn: Fare-baren? (emphasis on first syllable) fair.bearn
Muela: Mew-lah? (emphasis on first syllable) same
Kydex: Kye-dex? (emphasis on first syllable) same
Bowie: Boe-wee? (emphasis on first syllable) I say "bowe.wee" (rhymes with Joey) but I hear "boo.wee" a lot (rhymes with louie)
Mokume: I have no idea on this one, folks! If it's a Japanese word (which I think it is), then it's "Moe.koo.may"

I pronounce this like "choyle" (rhymes with boil).

Also, Eric Isaacson confirmed this back in June on the Busse Forum.
 
How do you pronounce quillon? This has driven me nuts for a loooong time! Is it quill-on, or are the Ls silent and mor elike a y, as in some french pronunciations? THat would make it key-yon
 
i wanted to thank this old thread, because I was curious how to pronounce Victorinox.

I had been apt to pronounce it vick-tor-EEE-nox, as I'd pronounce my favorite baseball player's last name, Shane Victorino (accent on the 3rd syllable)... but it seems like Victorinox is accented on the second! :)
 
Having spent a lot of time in Mexico (where Muela is the most common Fixed Blade brand available at stores) I'd have to say, the closest Spanish pronunciation would be:

Muela: Moo-L-ah. It's like the mu in mushroom, followed by the sound of letter L, and then the sound of the a in attorney.

By the way in Spanish it is only two syllables with emphasis on the first one
