Like a lot of you I suspect, I had a 1 x 42 before I got my 2x72 grinder. The basic 1x42 I have still gets used a lot, and is OK, but I would like one that is the equal of my KMG, or a Bader, etc... Shouldn't be all that difficult to figure out, but at the same time if there is a pro grade one out there, pics, or some build-alongs, I would love to have a look.

How about the Bill Pace grinder?

I've been leaning the same direction lately... I thought about building a little 1x42 tooling arm type grinder, like a kmg. I'd like to be able to use some more versatile setups on the little grinder. My basic 1x42 that I started on is still damn handy. I sharpen knives, drill bits, whatever all the time on it.

Good luck.

No way! That's the same little red grinder I have. I put a 1/2 horse motor on it, and it actually gets some work done. Not a lot of room for modification on it, though. With a 1x42, the drive pulley takes up proportionally more of the belt- you could get more wheel base to play with if you went with a 3450 rpm motor and used a smaller drive wheel. That's probably the way I'll go if I ever build one, anyway.
