Has anyone had any experience with the Pro-Tech Ciabatta and also what are the quality of the knives that Pro-Tech produces? Thanks!

I've handled one at a semi-local shop. It's a pretty nice knife, but the 'assisted opening' technology doesn't excite me as it's implemented in the Ciabatta... It's an auto, who's button only unlocks it from open. There's a small catch inside of the knife that holds the blade closed. In order to open it, you must depress the blade and allow that catch to slip, (while the knife blade is pointed down), and then you can release the blade and it springs into place... It does have an alternate safety as well. Anyway, like I said, it doesn't excite me. Put that blade on a variant of the godson, rather than a fairly gimmicky assisted opener, and I think it'd be a more interesting package.

I have not handled the Ciabetta, but in general the Protech knives that I have handled have all been excellent qulity. They are usually considerd one of the top few auto makers out there.

Pro-tech is one of the best if not the best auto maker out there. I have a Pro-tech Godson and I love it. It is a real stunner and really impresses people. The opening mechanism on the Ciabatta seems a waste to me. I would just suggest getting the Godson (a true auto) or if you want the more tactical look go for a Pirahana or Benchmade auto.

As the owner of quite a few upper and lower-end Microtech, Benchmade, and Protech Auto's--plus a number of other smaller makers--I can honestly say that (at least in my experience), Protech generally produces the fastest and most reliable automatics out there. Don't get me wrong, I love all three manufacturers--I collect them almost exclusively. However, I have NEVER been let down by Protech--this cannot be said for MT or BM. In my experience, the quality control and customer service is second to none. I've had more than my share of issues with Microtech Q.C., and the Benchmades are reliable, but slower--don't have that powerful action the Protech's have. So, imho you can't go too wrong with any Protech. That being said, I completely agree that if you like the look of the Ciabatta, just go with the Godson. If you look around, you can get one pretty cheap--and they are ultra-nice!:D
