I was looking at all of the protech godfather series knives when i found myself tracing a picture of its from and blade. After that, i started drawing and editing and customizing the knife by drawing it on the paper. But i want to see what it would look like on a computer. I have seen those adds with the computer designed 3d knife spinning in the "view the upcoming knives" links on some knife sites, and i really want to be able to describe the knife to someone and they can design it on the computer and send it to me and see how it would look and stuff. but i don;t know where to look, what the programs are, or who to go to. Please, any suggestions?

There are different programs out there that will do what you are describing, but the ones I know of have a pretty steep learning curve if you're just wanting it for a few knives. But if you are looking at software that you will be prototyping with regularly I suggest taking a look at the programs below.

Caligari TrueSpace
TrueSpace is one of the lowest priced 3D packages that produces very nice results. Runs about $395 for Version 5.

Rhino 3D
This is about the easiest and most professional 3D modeling package, but it does come at a price. Around $895.

Blender 3D
There is also a FREEware program called blender. You can download and use it for free. But I personally haven't used it yet.

I personally use Adobe Photoshop for simple 2D designs, and Rhino 3D for complex 3D models where I want to rotate and see all angles. I actually just posted one rough sketch I did in Photoshop in this forum with a question I had.

I'm a graphic artist and web developer for my day job so feel free to contact me.
