Pro Tech Vs. Benchmade

Hi, I'm working in Baghdad, and I'm looking for a really good quality knife. It's easy for me to have it shipped here, any sort, but the automatics I've used in the past have died (mechanism breaks) after a year or so. I understand the Benchmade (which the 82nd airborne were issued with in Afghanistan) are great, and I love the look of the Pro-tech Godfather series.

does anyone have any experience with both types? Or is there one which is seen as superior?

I have had both Pro Tech(Godfather/son, TR3) and Benchmade. My protech had more kick than my benchmade and both are nice. I have the BM 3550, the 5000, and a few of the mini and auto strykers.

What I can vouche for is I thought I had lost my mini-stryker on a rainy night(looked forever and never found it). 6 months later I am using a rototiller in my front yard and kicked up the knife, I ran it under water and shot some WD-40 in it and it opened up(though slowly). I did have to replace the main pivot screw due to rust but the blade was fine, just light surface rust. Now I dont know if I got lucky or not but that impressed the hell out of me. That knife still opens fine and has left me a huge BM fan because of it.

Now if you ask in the auto section of the forums they surely could tell you which one they think is better, too me both have good blade steels and solid construction.

I would suggest the TR series over the Godfather series if its going to see alot of day to day use, the TR has a more practical blade style than the godfather series and imo more comfortable over prolonged use.

I was under the impression that autos would be a poor choice for the sandbox, mainly because of sand getting in the firing mechanism. Can Benchmades be considered the Kalashnikovs of the sandbox knives?

Hey, new member here and first post. I would say that if you want a auto Benchmade try asking on their forum. I have read that in the event that the auto part of the auto axis breaks it turns into just an axis knife (In other words it still works, just not like an auto). The axis lock is not hat bad and has been put thgough some abuse. If you need some convincing try look at this topic.

I hope it is not against the rules to post this topic or something. It is my first time posting here and I don't know all the fules yet.

Hope this helped.

for overall utility/toughness/and ease of repair incase something does go wrong i would say BM all the way. Their waranty is almost unlimited and even if something isnt covered say an obviously abused broken blade they will replace the blade itself and give the knife a full lookover(replacing all screws/washers/lubricating/etc.) for 30 dollars + shipping.

I have used my axis locks in dirt and sand (Florida panhandle) for years and have never replicated the problems some individuals have seemed to find. I would trust the axis lock over any of my other folding blade locks.
