i just picked up a old nib cross pen that is 14K gold filled,what is the difference between 14K gold filled and 14K.

I hope someone will correct me if I have this wrong, but...

I believe that gold-filled means some other metal has been coated (plated?) with gold. As opposed to the plain term "gold" which is equivalent to solid gold.

Not solid gold, not exactly gold plated, but a layer of gold bonded to a base metal.
