i just picked up a old nib cross pen that is 14K gold filled, what is the difference between 14K gold filled and 14K.

I hope someone will correct me if I have this wrong, but...

I believe that gold-filled means some other metal has been coated (plated?) with gold. As opposed to the plain term "gold" which is equivalent to solid gold.
